Hi Everyone. I paid an immigration attorney $2500.00 plus the filling fee just to file my I 130. She told me and my wife the whole process to aquire the visa would be that much. Now that we are at the NVC stage she sent another statement saying I owe her another $2500. plus $492. So $2992 all together on this statement. I am livid. She lied to us and is just billing us whatever she wants. Now I want to take it over from here but she is on the paper work as being the agent with the NVC. Can we change that at this point. We are being taken for fools and I refuse to pay any more than I already have...other than the filling fees. I think we can handle the rest of the process. But I just need to know if we can take it from here.

Call the NVC and tell them you want to remove the attorney from your case.

This thread gives more specifics.

I live in Canada so the process is a little different for me. However when i contacted a lawyer in the US. He said when immigrating from Canada it is a waste of money to pay a lawyer at all. He was the one who told me all the steps to take (for free over the phone)! The whole process has costed us/will cost us; 350 (i130 fee), (404 fee due at interview), 275 cdn (medical) and the trip to the interview. Plus also the pictures and police checks etc that were basically chump change.

Get out!! Our lawyer actually slowed down our process at the NVC. Forgot to send in my DS 230 for 3 weeks, and advised us wrong about our I-864 requiring us to deal with an RFE. It sucked. He ended up costing us about 3 months of unnecessary waiting when it was all said and done. You can get out or the lawyer set up easily. 5000 for the whole process is way too much. We paid about 2400 for the whole process everything included. Wish we hadn't though.

I need to become some sort of legal person so I can charge $2500 for immigration. Considering there millions of people filling for immigration, i can make a killing just by doing a few immigration a month. Good havens.

If I had it to do over, I would have not paid for the legal help either, I only paid $500 but that was before I found Visa Journey, all the information my attorney gave me was available here for no cost. Could have used the $500 for other fees that I will pay later in the process. Basically Paid $500 for her to fill out forms...hindsight is 20/20. But at the time I was intimidated by the process and thought it would be helpful to have an attorney for the advice...when it was not really necessary. Unless your case is extremely complicated forgo the lawyer. It is not really needed.

You can remove the attorney by re-filing DS-3032 again. Talk to NVC operator.

Attoney is needed for complex cases only such as deportation issue, criminal matters etc.

For straight-forward cases, VJ is the help.

ya, can 'de-enroll' the attorney -

but

I suggest you do it right after you've paid the AOS and IV fees ONLINE

One small benefit of having an attorney file the G-28 with the initial I-130 submittal

is that

the fee bills show up at the same time in the online web portal.

Once you've paid the fees ONLINE contact NVC to 'de-tach' the attorney from yer casefile.

/end of Suggestion.

Good Luck !

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
