It doesn't matter what your route to Russia is, you can fly in from any country as long as you have proper entry documents to get on the plane to Russia and get off the plane in Russia.

That said, if you have another leg of the trip planned, like leaving Russia coming back and staying in Russia again before heading off elsewhere, you need a "multiple" entry for Russia not a single entry.

Hope I haven't confused you with that extra note, if you are only going in and out once you are set regardless of what country you fly in from. Have a nice trip.

Brokenfamily is exactly correct. To clarify, you had your visa issued in the US because your passport is a US passport. You need a visa when you cross the border into Russia. I have also flown into Finland and crossed the land border. It completely doesn't matter what country you were in before you got to Russia.

On another tangent, this is simple for Americans because they don't need a visa to go to most countries. If a Russian wanted to do something like this it wouldbe much more complicated because he or she would need a visa for most countries that he or she wanted to stop in (a Russian that wanted to stop in Canada on the way to the US would need a Canadian visa and a US visa).
