No, actually my husband does not agree with all policies and government here. The point is he has stated those feelings to me in the past and out of respect for me he leaves it at that. If he were to continually bad mouth my country and/or it's people then we would have serious problems. I certainly don't think Egypt is perfect either and he knows my thoughts on that as well. However, it IS HIS HOME COUNTRY, therefore I am respectful of that fact as well. My point is it is fine to not agree with every little aspect of American culture and politics, but in my opinion IT IS NOT OK to spew venom and hatred towards it at every turn, meanwhile continue to benefit from a lifestyle that is clearly superior than one he could have ever had back home in Egypt.

Betsy, here is a wonderful clip on the RESPONSIBILITIES of being a US Citizen

Responsibilities of a United States Citizen

Citizens of the U.S. have the opportunity and the responsibility to participate in their government.

The most important right citizens have is the right to vote. By voting, you have a voice in the government. The people decide who will represent them in the government. Officials can be voted in or out of office. Every person’s vote counts the same as another person’s vote.

The right to vote is a duty or responsibility as well as a privilege. It is important for all citizens to vote in every election to make sure that the democratic, representative system of government is maintained. Persons who do not vote lose their voice in the government. Before voting in an election, each citizen should be well informed about the issues and candidates.

The government may call upon citizens to serve on a jury. If you are chosen for jury duty, you must stop work and attend the trial as long as you are needed. The members of the jury need to decide the case in as fair a way as they can.

Men can be asked to serve in the armed forces. During times of war, any man who is physically able can be called upon to fight for the U.S. In peaceful times, there can be a draft or men and women can enlist voluntarily.

Every person is expected to obey the laws of the community, state and country in which he or she lives. All Americans are expected to respect the rights of others. All persons living in the U.S. are expected to pay the income taxes and other taxes honestly and on time.

To be responsible members of their communities, you can volunteer your services to help obtain needed improvements. Citizens can offer their knowledge and talents to different local organizations or committees. Participation in town meetings, public hearing and community projects is important for community improvement and for finding out the problems that need to be solved.

So lets get this straight, a US citizen can be called up in the draft and have to serve the US

They have a right to vote, they HAVE to pay taxes and may have to serve on a jury.

I do not understand really what all the ruckus is about.

If you cannot feel compfortable being called up in a draft and serving this country in a time of crisis and that includes armed conflict, civil crisis etc, there is one alternative.

Do not take the oath and do not naturalise. No one really NEEDS to become a US citizen. They like to be because they can travel visa free and bring people over as far as family but other than that, I see very little talk about what we as a nation can expect from someone naturalising and becoming American

Boo hoo if actually having to GIVE BACK something to the US for the right to be an American.

FROM USCIS DIRECTLY

Note that USCIS even says that you should serve the country when required to.

If you cant feel loyalty to the USA and dont want to support it, do not naturalise and keep your greencard.

Oh and it also says you have to give up allegiance to any other nation or sovereignity. So in other words, you cannot put foreign needs first or concerns and your first loyalty should be to the USA.

With your staunch position HIT - I am surprised you wanted your husband to come to the US - as every opportunity you had you would bellow out that your husband simply does not want to come to the US (and therefore couldn't possibly be using you).

I hardly find asking that people who naturalise be loyal to the United States and willing to serve it bellowing..

USCIS clearly states those requirements on their naturalisation hand out

USCIS and the resonsibilites of citizenship

I dont think its asking too much that people that naturalise and become US citizens feel loyalty to the US and would be willing to serve in its defense. I do not think that represents a staunch position. I think it just follows what USCIS says and the oath says.

I don't get what your last 2 posts have to do with the discussion. Who said they wouldn't serve if drafted? Vote? This all started because someone pointed out that while fantastic that this woman is getting her face fixed there are scores more injured and killed by American policies. HIT you took that reality to mean something else.

Actually I did not take that comment to mean any more than it did. This started out as a simple post. People have stated their opinions one way or the other. Someone said they hated the US Army. Then others have said other things.

I merely think that if someone should naturalise they should realise that part of that oath states they are willing to serve the US and if they are a man, legally they can be drafted.

So really conclusively, if you cannot feel comfortable serving the US in the capacity of defending it, you should not naturalise and become a US citizen.

I think the only reason the US is consistantly singled out is because we allow reporting of what we do. There are countries that black out media and dont allow reporting and journalists never make it out with any story whatsover. I dont think the US commits any more war crimes than Russia ( think Chechnya) or any of the African republics commiting genocide on a daily basis, torture and disappearance and media expulsion ( think Western Sahara and Morocco)police brutality and torture ( Egypt) You see what people do because we report it. We also discipline the perpetrators.

It was a simple article about a woman saved by US soldiers when her husband and brother cut her nose and ears off. No one in her family would help her so a female relative drove her to a military base and they took her to the US for surgery.

I am not saying that any of the behavior you are referring to is permissable. Its just easier to see when Americans do things because we are alot more transparent.

I think its very reasonable and the USCIS does to expect someone naturalising to protect and defend a country who's citizenship they are acquiring.

Its in the oath its in USCIS guidelines and makes good sense.

And I agree that much of these posts have gotten off topic. Its nice to see a diversity of opnions and at least we have the freedom to post them.

The American media unfortunately is a lot more censored than other news. Watch the nightly news in Europe and you'll find them reporting much more freely and critically of what is going on :( I wish it were more transparent and less $$ driven!

For clarification AQIM means Al Qaeda in the Magreb

The christian science monitor is a great source of impartial news.

The Christian Science Monitor is one of the best sources of news in the US.

Christian Science Monitor

Really great article about how the Moroccan government is spinning the AQIM threat into repression of saharaouis and lack of transparency in arrests

From the Atlantic

Beware the warnings

None of the attacks in Morocco in 2003 had anything to do at all with the polisario. But they are being used to abuse the saharaouis and prevent media reporting out of Layoune

It was in Hot Guys remarks about the US Army right under the war porn conversation

HiT, You may want to go reread what he said. He did not say he "hated the Army". He said "I didn't't say I hated the Army" Several people tried to tell you that you misread it.

I have read this whole thread and there was no one that said that the "hated the US Military". HiT, can you please find that quote for me?

Meriem (F)

There was a post that said he hated the US Army. Somehow it seems to have been removed. I dont have any idea who could have done that except a moderator. There are some missing posts. I dont know who or why they removed it

I just reread the thread and the post is gone. It said something about alot of Americans hating Barrack Obama and that he hated the US Army but not Americans or something to that effect. I have no idea why the post was removed but it was definitely there and now its gone. I had no idea someone was editing threads. Oh well
