I am just really wondering if somehow you can be very pro american both national and international policy and be married to someone from that side of the world.Again, nothing to do with you personally. I just wonder if there are any couples where the wife remains true to her background and people and doesnt just throw everything she grew up with to the wind or wall just to please some guy or new found friends

Have you considered that some people just don't have that nationalistic fervor and maybe do honestly disagree with U.S. policies and that it has nothing to do with "throwing everything she grew up with to the wind"? How insulting to imply that anyone who doesn't walk around waving the flag has been somehow brainwashed by "some guy".

i like living in the us, my husband likes living in the us, there's a whole lot to like about the place. fortunately, there's no requirement that one be a brainless, spineless, bereft of morality jingoist in order to live here.

if that were MY family member murdered and mutilated by us soldiers, with MY family member's body parts used to make necklaces out of, i wouldn't give a damn about tribunals, to say the least.

there's been far too much brutality, misery, and complete sadism inflicted on afghans and iraqis to make me go all warm and fuzzy over anything there. it doesn't remotely begin to make up for it.

i don't buy into "at least when americans screw up they admit it" either. remember those people that lived here before white europeans showed up? the ones that survived five hundred years later aren't doing so great. whitewashing the us doesn't help the us.

I completely agree with the two posts above mine. I've always kind of questioned US foreign policy/involvement and gov't, in general. I think everyone should. No one should be obligated to be patriotic just because they live here or were born here. I dislike the attitude that because one is "fortunate" enough to be able to live in the US that they are required to love everything about it and must support its policies blindly.

You know what I love about america? The fact that we're allowed to disagree with the government line, and generally talk smack about policies we don't like.

Also, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert. Never ceases to amaze AbuS that they're allowed to say what they say about the gov'ment.

You know, I too am sick of people living in our country yet want to bash America. Why come here if you have horrible ideas about our country? Have your SO move to your country and then you can bash America all you want. I just de-friended someone on facebook who is from a muslim country because she continually posts anti-american things there and bs about how the pentagon was not hit by a plane blah blah blah. I think one thing you can say for most Americans is when we screw up we admit it. When we acted a fool by humiliating and torturing Iraqi soldiers I was one of the first to denounce it. Just because you marry someone from a muslim country doesn't mean you have to sanction all behaviors good and bad. If it's bad it's bad and if it's good it's good. There have been many humanitarian acts that have come out of these stupid wars and I don't believe all of them are just war propoganda.

Here is exactly how I feel.

I think we have made alot of mistakes all over. I absolutely will not cheerlead any kind of cruelty to people at all anyway, period. I think that we have made horrible mistakes but most of the messes we are in were former colonies or places somehow Europe messed up in its chase for colonies.

Congo was mentioned...Congo was founded by France and like many other French colonies, there was genocide, asset stripping of the country and many crimes perpetrated that were horrific. If France would single handedly contribute to clean up the calamitiess it caused all over the world instead of running away from its messes, the USA would have never even entered into Viet Nam,there wouldnt have been a post colony muslim blood bath in Algeria, Rwanda, which was belgian, which received much of its ethnic divides from French precedents of class seperation would not have turned into the mess that it did. The list goes on and on. Iraq has graves from the early 1900s from British soldiers who were trying to seperate the gulf states. The US with its tradition of isolationism had absolutely nothing to do with fertilising the discord between the Shias and the Sunnis although later we literally built Saadam to fight Iran.

Yes our foreign policy is a mess but I dont hate this country or its soldiers anymore than France or French people should detest their country for shipping thousands of french born jews to death camps (children and babies were ripped out of orphanages) or in fact the genocide the French did in Algeria itself dehumanised an entire country, not to mention what the French and Spanish did in Morocco ( the riff)showing Napalm on people in the mountains, planting land mines, conducting secret nuclear energy tests and murdering women and children, boiling them in vats of oil

The USA is not the only villian in the world, just a convenient scape goat for all the worlds ills. I have traveled and lived all over the world and mena and honestly when I was 17 I sat and listened to very entitled europeans American bash only to learn for myself that other countries namely the colonisers have gotten the US into alot of the messes we are in. Is the a freedom of information act in Europe like there is in the USA?No. Our country has been forced to take precautions because we have American soldiers of mena birth picking up guns and plowing down 10s of people, American born teens of Somali birth, fighting against us overseas. We have to do the things we can as a nation to protect ourselves. We have to also prosecute people who do wrong. I know you can see our soldiers doing horrible things because we have laws that expose them. But there were no cameras through the years to capture all of the colonisers attrocities and the rape of literally everything beautiful in Africas wild. If you want to know what caused the power vaccum in the middle east and north africa that literally started islamic extremism, you need to look at Europes actions after world war one and two.

We have made horrible mistakes but I wouldnt ever want bash our countries soliders, its people, and its traditions to some how fit in to some kind of imaginary new peer group, one full of self hatred and bile towards the United States. Its very easy to say, I love my country, its people, its freedom and traditions but I dont agree with the war, or actions of the government, etc etc etc. Its the self loathing or how I call it slam book of people who think they have to throw away everything they grew up with or knew all their life for a relationship or a new set a friends that irks me. When Haiti s earthquake happened, everyone screamed the USA s name to come help, same with the Tsunami. . If I was from overseas, and I saw a native born American ashamed of what she was, I would lose so much respect for her because even people from the third world love who they are..Watch the Africa cup and even the poorest person is proud of what they are. Why shouldnt we be? Yes our country makes mistakes, has made mistakes but I love it immensely along with the opportunities I have been given

I just wonder what make the people sign the I HATE AMERICA slambook when they marry a mena person..

Couldn't have said it better myself. Egypt definitly isn't perfect but you won't EVER hear my husband criticize it. Therein lies the difference between many fickle Americans and the spouses we marry from 3rd world countries.

Um, yeah duh. That's why we live in the US. We appreciate the freedoms being a citizen gives us, and we enjoy exercising them freely.

Who here has said they "signed the I hate America slambook" because they married a MENA guy? HG mentioned that American soldiers have also committed atrocities in Afghanistan, he never said "I hate America". Why is it when someone from MENA (or any other foreigner) says something regarding US foreign policy or what have you that it automatically means they hate America? I don't think anyone in this thread has mentioned they hate America.

I love Colbert

If you cant freely support who you are and your birthright, whats the point of being here? Its so much better to find some place more in tune with who you are..ALTHOUGH NO PLACE IN THE WORLD WILL PUT UP WITH THE WHINING AND BASHING WE DO.You have the right to free speech..but you cannot yell fire in a crowded theatre . I dont agree with much that happened during the BUSH administration but I dont bash American soldiers and I realise that their sacrifices through the years have afforded me the life I have

Meh, AbuS criticizes Egypt frequently, because the government is a horrid little nepotistic dictatorship that is running the country into the ground.

We're equal opportunity criticizers.

Did you see the orignial post?

Then read what subsequently was written about it being "war porn"

There is a slam book. Its passed around and you either fall into two groups, the ones who still feel American and like it and the ones that replace everything about themselves with everything different, retaining little of their identity until one day they wake up, and everything they bought into is gone and they go back to being American. Which if they stayed that way, perhaps they wouldnt have suffered so

there is a slam book...trust me...and all of us know people who identity flipped into something much different just from getting married.. its stupid and it never ends up right

I just posted a feel good article..and apparently it caused people to start america bashing...read down and then understand why perhaps the slam book idea is very true

dr congo, where the war is, was belgian.

don't believe for one minute that i don't take anyone else to task for the heinous ####### they've pulled around the world, on a case by case basis. there's plenty to complain about everyone. but dammit if us soldiers blowing up innocent afghans for sport and making necklaces out of their body parts doesn't raise some eyebrows in 2010 despite everyone else in the world having some bad history. ayesha's nosejob doesn't make me feel better about them, or any other us soldier being there, at all.

My husband is critical of Egypt, also. Many aspects of Egypt including gov't. Many Egyptians I know criticize Egypt, fellow Egyptians, Egyptian gov't, etc.
