There should be no reason to be concerned about the military service unless they suspect him of subversion or something. They even have a program if accelerated citizenship for LPRs that join the military and LPRs such as our 19 year old son MUST register for the draft, so there is no bar to military service and it is even encouraged.

Yes, my husband's recruiter told him that after only six months of service, the Army will help him apply for citizenship. And apparently the military pays the fees.

They have reinstated the draft? I didn't know that. Do they require only males to register?

There's no draft in the US as in there's no required military service and you're not going to be sent to war right now, but once a man turns 18, he has to register for the Selective Service or he will be unable to get a government job or get federal money for college, etc.

Here's the source of your problems. Older woman/younger man = red flag. Probably just taking a little extra time to sort it all out.

(Typically they don't give Secret or higher clearances to anyone working on "native" information.) More likely, he'll be signed up for Farsi, Pashtu, Urdu, Arabic, Mandarin or something along those lines.

Gotta love the army. They'll teach a Colombian to speak Russian and a Russian to speak Spanish and then promptly station both of them in Kansas.

Once you become a citizen that changes, Slim. They also look at your ties to the "motherland", at least that's what it seemed like last time I was in a position to be able to get a job like that. (wasn't the Army, btw, so you might be right, durrr)

When they need people they are a little more lenient with whom they'll accept. They try to shy away from "real" Russians or "real" Iraqis, etc., but as we've seen recently, a 22-year-old who's been in Detroit since he was six has a lot more ties to the U.S. than Baghdad. They'd still take some corn-fed farmboy from Iowa before the "real" Iraqi, but they're starting to realize it's a lot harder to pass off a Hawkeye than the guy they deemed "more of a threat."
