We are going camping this coming weekend with my sister and her bf in Ontario.. since alcohol is cheaper here, we are going to be bringing some with us.. I am just wondering how much extra is it to bring some over your exemptions.. I can't find the rates for it anywhere..going back into the US is easy... but going into Canada.. nope.. we will be there for more than 48 hours so i know we each get a case of beer or a bottle of liquor each.. but I dont know for more than that... Does anyone know??? Thanks!

I work for Canada customs but unfortuanatley I'm not going to be able to give you a definate answer. The large mark-ups for alchohol are based provincially - I work at a Manitoba border. Manitoba has a huge provincial mark-up fee that does not make it economical to bring back alcohol over and above what you get duty free for you 48 hour exemption. For example an additional litre of alcohol brought through at Manitoba will cost approx $22 CAD for the duty, taxes and provicial mark-up. Basically it will cost you more than what you could buy it for in Manitoba. I do know that Ontario's provincial mark-up is less than Manitoba's but I don't know how much less. Basically, the point of the duty and provincial mark-ups is so that the alcohol from the US will be similar in price to what you would buy it for in Canada - makes for a level playing field. If you want to know what it will cost give a port in Ontario a call.

we plan to but there are limits on what you can take in duty free.. anything over that and you will be paying extra duty on top of what you pay at the store.. i was just wondering how much you would have to pay for going over the limits
