I was wondering, what's the best way to send my father in-law some of the local good stuff? Anyone send it in a balikbayan box? Or can I bring it in checked baggage?

are you coming to the US (bringing local good stuff from the phils) or going home to the phils w/ a balikbayan box? i'm guessing you're planning on bringing them as pasalubong in the US so the things that would matter are weight (that you're allowed in total luggage and money you're willing to pay if you have excess baggage. in any case, make sure though that if you're including such foods as bagoong and daing to declare them on the US customs form to avoid any problems. =)

Best way would be through checked baggage. No extra fees required.

I believe the airline restrictions are more strict than those of Balikbayan box. If this is not a concern, I'd go for checked baggage first.

I'm thinking about traveling from the US to Phils with some Blue Moon, Sams Seasonal, etc.. so that the father-in-law can try out our local beers.. I'm guessing balikbayan would work, but it might get "old" before arrival.. I'm curious what the airlines would do about checking in beer..

We're going next year, so I'll have to let everyone know how it goes..

Yeah, I know what you mean. Old, stale beer is no fun drinking.

You'll be fine carrying beer in your checked luggage. TSA allows for beverages less that 24% alcohol content, and is not subjected to hazardous materials regulation. Delta confirms this.

So, go ahead and prepare a small inventory of your finest ales!

I have brought wine back and forth overseas, as long as you report it at customs I dont think there are any problems with simply keeping it in checked baggage.

I bought 3 pints of Tanduy Rum in the Phils. $1.80 total! Cheaper than a bag of butterfingers. No problem getting it back here.
