I've read that your passport has to be valid 6 months from your interview date...now I just read that it has to be valid at least a year! The problem is my passport expires in August 2011!

I went to the office to get a new passport today, but they told me Ill get a new passport number and my current one (which ive used to process all the k1 visa papers)will be marked as invalid! So she advised me to use my current passport and not renew yet.

My interview is in 2 weeks, and if i get the visa will they give it to me if my passport expires under a year from now?!

I renewed my passport while I was going through the K-1 process for that same reason. It was going to be valid through the 6 months, but not for a year. At the interview it didn't seem to matter that I had a different passport number, they never asked. Canada will give you your old passport back, so you can prove the old number was yours at the time you filled if it becomes an issue.

What does the Packet 3 say these days? Back in April of 2009 it said 12 months, and the example P3 on the Canada wiki says 12 months, but I know they have been changing things lately.

If the packet 3 says 12 months, I would renew it. I can tell you from experience that having a different passport number wasn't an issue. If you get to the interview and they tell you they need it to be valid for a year, then what? You will need to go back, renew the passport, and then send it back to them so your visa can be issued. This could set you back several months.
