USCIS online case status check, how reliable?

Hi everyone,

I am a USC. My wife sent an AOS package on Aug 27th, got the receipt notice on Aug 2nd. Still waiting for the biometrics appt letter.

I have a question concerning the USCIS online case check. USPS recently lost the last pay stub that was sent to me from my employer. No big deal, they will send out a duplicate for my records.

But I am afraid that USPS could lose more important mail, like the biometrics appt letter, or AOS interview. That would be bad.

Does the USCIS online case check say when a biometrics appt letter, interview letter or RFE is sent? Does the receipt number on the receipt notice allow me to check online during the whole process? I am asking this because I read somewhere that the receipt number on the NOA ( receipt notice) and biometrics appt letter are different. Is that true?

Thanks for your help!!!

I am the US citizen, my wife is the applicant.

Adjusting from J1 Trainee visa:

August 25th, 2010: Filed AOS package to USCIS

August 27th, 2010: Package received by USCIS

September 2nd, 2010: Received I797 for I-130, I-485, I-765

October 14th, 2010: Received biometrics appointment letter (will be on Nov 5th)

AOS interview will be on January 13th, 2011!

January 13th, 2011: Approved at the day of the interview

Next step, removal of conditions

In our experience, the system is pretty hit and miss (mostly miss) It's the same system, and our initial petition was never updated after they received it on Jan 28, 2009, despite that we just celebrated our first anniversary and he's been a perm. resident for over 6 months. The AOS portion of our journey was a little better, except they updated our case to say they mailed us an RFE after we had already "resolved" the issue. It DID say when we were approved etc, but not a peep about the biometrics notice or the interview notice.

K-1:

January 28, 2009: NOA1

June 4, 2009: Interview - APPROVED!!!

October 11, 2009: Wedding

AOS:

December 23, 2009: NOA1!

January 22, 2010: Bogus RFE corrected through congressional inquiry "EAD waiting on biometrics only" Read about it here.

March 15, 2010: AOS interview - RFE for I-693 vaccination supplement - CS signed part 6!

March 27, 2010: Green Card recieved

ROC:

March 1, 2012: Mailed ROC package

March 7, 2012: Tracking says "notice left"...after a phone call to post office.

More detailed time line in profile.

Thanks for your answers.

When I called the 1800 number, it seemed like they didn't have any extra information than I did ( they just read to me the text on the online case check).

This is pretty scary if there's no reliable way of knowing if an appointment letter gets sent to me, should USPS lose the letter ...
