Scholar and a gentleman? Take that back.

And no I can't take these ideas seriously. I'm not wired that way. Sorry.

All I can say to that is that you will be mourned, and you will be missed.

The universe is damaged and we'd be better off as moonbeams?

The universe is perfectly the way it should be and being a human being is an amazing and wondrous experience, one that I would not have missed for all the moonbeams in china, thanks all the same. We humans could and should ensure that it is that way for most humans, we have the ability to do that if we choose to. Mostly however we are scared of collective choice because of the danger of that conflicting with individual endeavour and success, which it can and has in the past particularly if collective endevour really means supporting a political elite in a position of superiority, comfort and power at the dire expense of those doing all the work; now that's an interesting dichotomy if you really want to have a topic to chew on.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Death is not bad and wrong, it is however somewhat of a dilemma as naturally, while alive we rarely want to be dead - undergoing extreme pain and suffering being the exception. Death is just something we have to come to terms with because it is our destiny.

This is where I lose faith in religion. How can someone who lived a pious life, was a good person, supported their family and raised their children right go to the same heaven as a monster who lured people to his home where he would brutally kill them, do disgusting things to their bodies, and then eat them, just because they repented at the end?

That's why Catholics believe in Purgatory. Being truly sorry for the wrong one has done is just the first step. They must go through a process of redemption.

Preaching? Take it as you will - it is simply my opinion. As to philosophy, there are many schools of thought, but of one thing we are all certain, we will die and the experience of death is the same regardless of your spiritual beliefs.

I guess if we could just write our own reality we might necessarily include Purgatory to make things fair.

As for the Purgatory in Catholicism, how is it fair if others can minimize your time spent there by other offering up prayers for you?

In other words, why does a Bill Clinton get shorter burn time than you..... just because Bill has more friends to pray for his soul?

(There is a serious question in there somewhere if anyone knows the answer>)

Seriously Danno, can you post in any thread that is not politically themed without taking some pathetic partisan pot shot?

Pathetic indeed, as if Clinton even remotely qualifies as the epitome of evil whose redemption would be in some doubt

The existence of purgatory logically follows from two facts: our imperfection on earth and our perfection in heaven.

  1. At the moment of death, most of us are not completely sanctified (purified, made holy), even though we are justified, or saved by having been baptized into Christ's Body and having thereby received God's supernatural life into our souls, having accepted him by faith and not having rejected him by unrepented mortal sin.
  2. But in heaven, we will be perfectly sanctified, with no lingering bad habits or imperfections in our souls.
  3. Therefore, for most of us, there must be some additional change, some purification, between death and heaven. This is purgatory.

... Unlike heaven or hell, purgatory is only temporary. Purgatory takes away the temporal punishment still due for our sins after our Baptism, faith, and repentance have already saved us from the eternal punishment due to our sin, that is hell.

Catholic Christianity: A Complete Catechism of Catholic Beliefs

Based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church I like this down to earth analogy of purgatory.

Consider the following analogy about the experience of being a member of the human family. We go out and "play" in the neighborhood. In our adventures we fall down and "muddy" ourselves and have to return home for a good bath. After a thorough scrubbing, the beloved child is once again a sweet-smelling member of the family. If the muddy kid tried to slip on some clean clothes and come to supper without washing up his mother or father would quickly usher him off to get properly cleaned up. Sacramentally, we Catholics "wash as we go" in the blood of Christ.

But you never addressed my main question about Purgatory..... do the prayers of others have influence on your time in purgatory?

It seems I recall people praying for souls in purgatory.

Get a sense of humor will ya.
