K3 visa was made so that spouses could go to the US to be with their USC spouses sooner. K3 processing is supposed to be a few months quicker than the CR1/IR1 visa. But what happens recently is the USCIS approves both i130 form for immigrant visa and the i129f for non-immigrant K3 visa at the same time. When the NVC receives both of these forms together, the NVC will reject the i-129f and proceed to the i130 for immigrant visa processing. If this happens, your paperwork will stay at the NVC for a few months, depending on how fast you and your petitioner responds to the NvC's requests.

CR1/IR1 immigrant visa may take more time but it's worth waiting for. Through an immigrant visa, you don't have to adjust your status when you get to the US and pay $1,010. Unlike those who went there through K-3 who have to wait for 3 months to be able to work, immigrant visa holders can work from the first day they get there. But it is really up to you and your husband which you think is best for both of you.

We only filed for CR1.

We mailed all the paperwork from Jordan via DHL about a week after we got married there and could get copies of our marriage contract and certificate. Good luck!

If you are planning on getting married first before your SO files for your visa, it's better for the CR1 visa. We filed for both and ended up going the CR1 route.

Regardless of which way you do go, the time pending depends on how quickly you get all the paperwork together. Then also, it's up to the US embassy on whether or not you go into AP/AR.

Our journey was rather quickly, we filed in July'09 and my husband got his visa in Feb'10. It was very surprising, needless to say!

I haven't heard of many women from Egypt having trouble with the embassy and getting AP, but again it does happen.

Is your SO planning on starting the CR1 or K1 visa for you?

Good luck with your journey!

We did a Direct Consular Filing (CR1) from Egypt. Our timeline was 1 yr from beginning to end. You will find many

different timelines from those of us who filed thru Cairo. Are you planning on marrying in Egypt? Has she made

any trips to see you?
