Hello all,

I'm not sure if I'm posting in the correct forum. If not please direct me over to the right place.

The situation is this:

My wife has a friend whose daughter lives in the US. She is Russian but has her US citizenship(the daughter). She has recently married a Russian student here on an F-1 visa. They are putting together all of their forms and such to adjust his status but apparantly she might not meet the financial requirments and is in need of a sponsor (form I-864 I believe) Her mother has a green card but resides in Russia currently so I know she cannot sponsor them. She has asked if we would be willing to sponsor them in her place. My question is for how long are we liable for them (or him more specifically.) Does the sponsorship basically phaze out after he receives his permanent residency? I just want to know all of the risks involved ahead of time of course.

Thanks

The sponsor's requirements remain in effect until ANY ONE (not all) of the following happens:

1) The Immigrant (Beneficiary / Applicant) becomes a US Citizen.

2) The Immigrant works in the US for 40 quarters (approximately 10 years).

3) The Immigrant decides to permanently leave the US -OR- abandons (gives up) their resident status -OR- is an a process that will be judges that the immigrant DID abandon their resident status. (Simply said: they decide not to stay in the US anymore and leave for good).

4) If the Immigrant is in a removal proceeding (held by the US government) that determines their resident status is cancelled.

5) The Immigrant dies.

Interesting. I had no idea it was this involved. It would seem to me the sponsorship would end when they could demostrate self reliance. We're just a little paranoid that if things go bad between them we might end up liable for this guy and we don't even know him yet. I guess other friends have been asked and all have declined so far. I think they have the same concerns as us. Her mother is supposedly quite well off and actually plans to live here permanantly in a few years so that puts me a little more at ease but still you never know I guess.

Well, she (the daughter) would still be his main sponsor, so the goverment would "go after" her first if he collected any benefits. If they can't collect from her, then they would "come after" you.
