Question for the female American citizens

For what it is worth...

I (the US Citizen) married in Brazil and added my husband's last name to mine. I didn't change any of my documents - passport, SS card, driver's license, etc - until after we had gotten his visa approved and were both back in the US (we lived in Brazil and filed DCF). I never had a problem with any of my documents being in my maiden name, at least for US Officials (Brazilian feds were another issue altogether...I honestly think Brazil should adopt the national motto "We don't make anything easy.", but I digress....). I changed my SS card to my married name at the same time my husband applied for his SSN at my local SS office, where I had to provide my marriage certificate to prove the name change. Very simple process.

Actually CanadianRedneck - you didn't say might anywhere here

And this is the 21st century. Failing to take a husband's last name will not raise flags of a sham marriage and is highly unlikely that it will result in an RFE

Only recently did I take my husbands name, throughout the process I did not and it was never an issue

Good luck

I am the US wife I kept my ex-husband's last name because of my children and will not be adding my new husband's last name... I don't see a problem at all....

So in my case, I did change my name.

We are at the point in the immigration process where my husband will be going in for an interview within the next few months. So far, there hasn't been any issues with the fact that my SSN references my old name. Obviously, I need to do it, but does anyone see any hiccups in the next few months or at the interview?

Thanks,

- Sam

I decided not to change my name until everything was final and he was here in the states with me. I saw somewhere that if names on paper work don't match others, you needed to send along proof of the name change and since that just sounded like more paperwork (to explain why my driver's license, SS card, tax returns are in my old name) I thought it would just be easier to do everything now with the name that is on everything still.... and then change it all later. Guess that's like you Sam?? Good luck!

That is just a personal decision thus I would never tell someone to change or not change their names. I am going to be happily heading to the SSN office to change my last name ASAP. My son also wants a name change. My heritage will always be the same regardless of what last name I take on.

She did it along the way..most important is the SSN name change..then we filed...after that you can deal with those other things during the process...although I wouldn't take forever..because they will at some point run a background check, and if you haven't changed it, they'll ask for an RFE as to why you didn't change your last name to your new married name...suspicious of a sham marriage.

Untrue. Pure speculation on your part. I am a naturalized American citizen and have been through the whole Adjustment of Status process. I never changed my las name to my ex-husband's last name nor am I planning to change it when I get married to my foreign fiance. I had no problems whatsoever for my decision to not change my name. Nobody even asked me why I had not changed it!

August 23, 2010 - I-129 F package sent via USPS priority mail with delivery confirmation.

August 30, 2010 - Per Department of Homeland Security (DHS) e-mail, petition received and routed to California Service Center for processing. Check cashed. I-797C Notice of Action by mail (NOA 1) - Received date 08/25/2010. Notice date 08/27/2010.

After 150 days of imposed anxious patience...

January 24, 2011 - Per USCIS website, petition approved and notice mailed.

January 31, 2011 - Approval receipt notice (NOA 2) received by mail. Called NVC, given Santo Domingo case number, and informed that petition was sent same day to consulate.

Called Visa Specialist at the Department of State every day for a case update. Informed of interview date on February, 16 2011. Informed that packet was mailed to fiance on February, 15 2011.

February 21, 2011 - Fiance has not yet received packet. Called 1-877-804-5402 (Visa Information Center of the United States Embassy) to request a duplicate packet in person pick-up at the US consulate in Santo Domingo. Packet can be picked-up by fiance on 02/28.

March 1, 2011 - Medical exam completed at Consultorios de Visa in Santo Domingo.

March 9, 2011 at 6 AM - Interview, approved!

March 18, 2011 - POE together. JFK and O'Hare airports. Legal wedding: May 16, 2011.

Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.

My wife wants to change her name to my last name but wants to wait until after she arrives in the USA. She even wants to change the records in her home country to show her married name. She doesn't want a hyphenated name. I am really impressed by her desire to do this. I am really happy that I have such a wife and goes to show that I have a real winner. God blessed me, big time.

Strongly disagree. The person you marry will become part of your heritage.

Sorry, guess I'm more of a traditionalist..never been married before..even if my wife hyphenated her name, i'd be ok with that, but not to change that, traditionally for me, I disagree with..

You should've just remained partners or dating then, lol.

NOW..I'm in the doghouse..lol

Hi everyone,

I have a quick question for the female American citizens who are bringing over their non-American husband to the States. I recently realized that I will need to get a new SSN details with my new married name. I'm wondering if everyone else here did the same before or during their spouses immigration process. For those that didn't, were there any challenges with your SSN still being linked to your old name?

Thanks in advance,

- Sam

Social Security NUMBER stays the same but if the USC female chooses to change her name because of marriage, she'll need to go the the SS office and get it changed. They'll send a new card in her new name but it will have the same number.

Exactly... while I do plan to take his name eventually, there are children involved and so there is more to consider nowadays when it comes to the choice of changing your last name. But, like it's been stated above, it's not uncommon at all anymore in the United States, so there shouldn't be any red flags. Best of luck!

DITTO...I am the USC wife and am keeping my ex-husband's last name because of my children and will not be adding my new husband's last name. Not to mention that my husband's last name is very ethnic and difficult for many people here to pronounce. Also, all my professional certifications are in my ex-husbands name. Just too much of a hassle and my husband does not mind at all.
