I posted this under K3 forum before I found this one. I recd a RFE for documentary evidence of legal name change . I changed my name 20 years ago from my previous married name to a new name (not my birth name or former name). At that time it was acceptable in CA to use the "usage method". I have used this name consistently on Tax papers, SS card, DL, passport, contracts, employment etc. I would prefer not to use the court system. It would add an additional 4 or more weeks to this process. Not including the additional cost. What possible documentary evidence can I provide? :clock:

Having in mind you can't ask for an amendment to your birth certificate... maybe this link will be helpful: http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/selfhelp/other/namechangeqna.htm

I only offer advice - not even legal. Just the plain and simple kind.

The "useful link" and information master Mew, has provided yet another good link for info on the name change piece. Damn, it won't be long before she can challenge the best on this site. Go Mew go!!!!

I have a question though, 3rd RFE? Surmising one was IMBRA and this, the name change...What was the other RFE for?

I am no expert, but, how can you change your name in everything about your life, and not legally change you name in the court system?

This is gonna sound weird, but my ex- husband took my name when we got married.. He did'nt go thru the courts, but when we inquired about this, we were told that as long as the IRS knew about it, we were ok. He went down to the S S office and changed his name on his S S card, and that was it. We figured if a woman can do it after she gets married, why not the man? We never had a problem after that, being the IRS is the Almighty, or at least they pass themselves off as He.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

#1 and #2 REF were under IMBRA and identical. As some others on VJ.

In CA they had the "usage method" which was acceptable then. Basically you assumed the name and used it consistently thereafter. No problem but now that there is a "Homeland Security" organization there is a problem.

Thanks Mew, I had discovered that site. Tomorrow I will contact the self-help center at the courthouse. And contact the "Ask A Law Librarian" web site. Hopefully I will get some additional information.

Thanks all for your responses. :clock:

You would think, right. For the past 20 years I have filed state and federal taxes using this name. Evidently, 9-11 has affected more in our lives than I knew. :(
