Heracles, I wonder what you would consider a better qualification/profession. I do agree with you to a point, it is strange that one profession seems to be so overrepresented in politics. Then again, politics is "law-making" mostly, no? I mean, not necessarily in the executive, but certainly at the congressional level?!

Also, I tend to be skeptical when politicians claim they are "regular" people and "just like you". Whatever, I don't want my plumber or mail man (nothing agains plumbers or mail men) to run the country.

Oh, Ron Paul's website claims that 54% of the Senate and 36% of the House are lawyers.

You know, speaking as someone of primarily Italian heritage and from NY, I have to say I'm torn by this issue. It's one thing to make a caricature of yourself, but another to be ashamed by it....

Behind the scenes, Cuomo worked to avoid having the Democratic statewide ticket he leads be excessively dominated by Italians this fall. He privately fretted that if Eric R. Dinallo became the nominee for attorney general and the incumbent Thomas P. DiNapoli for comptroller, voters might find that one Italian too many.

"People will think we're trying to open a pizza parlor," Cuomo joked to a friend, according to people familiar with the conversation. (Dinallo was defeated in a five-way primary last month.)

that's actually racist...and he should be ashamed of himself by participating in it, and by joking in that manner. He's exhibiting the same bigotry that he claims to want to conquer...

Second difference is that they are not saying I am of Italian heritage, they make it out as if they have very strong and close ties to Italy; which is simply not true.

I get what you're saying, but I will say that this above, in my experience, is quite untrue. Many 2nd and 3rd generation Italians I know (and some are like the stereotypical loud, brash Jersey Shore type) DO have strong and close ties to Italy.

Then they would at least acknowledge that their behavior, attitude and taste is little like those in Italy. You will be hard pressed to find anyone in Rome dressed like some Jersey Shore kind of guy.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Acknowledge to whom? Should they wear a sign around their necks saying 'I know this isn't how it's done in Italy"? I don't think anyone is trying to say otherwise....

No I was thinking stop trying to make it out as if they are off-the-boat Italians, as really they are just douchebags.

BY, you are like VJ's very own Kanye.

I've never hidden my dislike for the losers that plague the has-been NE corridor.

I don't really see anyone making out that they are 'off the boat Italians'. Saying 'I'm Italian' doesn't necc mean they are 'off the boat'

Don't get me wrong, I think Italians do have a negative stereotype because of things like Jersey Shore, and basically any portrayal of an Italian-American on tv/movies/etc. But stereotypes sadly exist for a reason; they don't just get pulled out of someone's azz. I'm not trying to defend it, and yeah, there are a TON of people like that. In fact, my first husband was very much like that 'situation' guy  *for shame*! (As I matured, I knew it wasn't for me.) Anyways, I just felt compelled to say that there are also a lot of Italian-Americans, or Americans of Italian descent , that do NOT fit the stereotype...

In fact, I'd dare say that it's more a NY thing than an Italian thing, as I have tons of NY Jewish friends who act pretty much the same.

 Yeah, it does seem to be a NE thing..

Why is it so hard for people to act normal... It's like I don't want to stereotype but it's just so damn hard.

An example of a normal real Italian would be Giuliana Rancic or Giada De Laurentiis

What's a good example of a normal Australian? I hate to stereotype too.

The biggest point of this whole thread has gone uncommented on:

Behind the scenes, Cuomo worked to avoid having the Democratic statewide ticket he leads be excessively dominated by Italians this fall. He privately fretted that if Eric R. “People will think we’re trying to open a pizza parlor,” Cuomo joked to a friend, according to people familiar with the conversation. (Dinallo was defeated in a five-way primary last month.)

Cuomo is a self-hating racist. And depending on how 'hard he worked' to avoid another Italian on the ticket...well, that's discrimination. If he didn't want so many Italians on there, he shouldn't have run.
