Tax Transripts

Hello all, I recently received my yellow letter which mentions that I need to bring a tax return or tax transcript. I am going to order the free 4506-T form from the IRS. Now on the form it says to "enter the tax form number here (1040,1065 etc). So which number form do I order. I am assuming that 4506 is just the request for a particular form so which form to order. I am married so I filed jointly so I am assuming I order form 1040? Is this correct? We don't have a business or any thing like that. Do I just order a transcript? I ask as on the form I can order a return transcript, an account transcript, a record of account and 2 other which don't apply. Sorry for all the questions I just want to order the correct form.

4506T EZ and there you will list the years you want the transcripts for (can go three years back). You can also call IRS and if you're next to a fax machine they can fax them to you.

Still not sure if my step-daughter needs transcripts or not, but what the heck, they are free, so called that 1-800-829-1040 number. Had to listen carefully to the selections, but finally got to the tax transcript section.

Information you should have is the SS number of the person you want the transcripts for, just the numbers corresponding to the street address of that person, and the tax years you want the transcripts for. Since I read they are only interested in the last three years, the tax years were 2007, 2008, and 2009, with 2009 being the most recent return.

In using the touch tone to press in these numbers, an answering machine read them back ever so slowly, so you had to press 1 if correct. And you can only do one tax year at a time with the option of ending or going on to the next tax year. I did this at 4:30AM in the morning when most intelligent people are in bed. But think I was on the phone for ten minutes. Said they will ship out the tax transcripts within ten business days, will see what happens. Have four more days to wait.

Wish I done this for my wife's application, would have saved a lot of paper work on my part with all those W-2's and 1099's attached.
