I went to the RCMP because it was more convenient to do it that way. It was taking too long to get an appointment with the local police in my area. No fingerprints for Canada. (Like mozplay, I had to get fingerprinted for out of country check/application for other countries.)

When I got my RCMP police certificate, I asked the officer how long my certificate was valid for and he said 6 months (although, it didn't say that on the certificate). My certificate was dated April 18, 2006 and my interview was August 11 (I guess that doesn't help answer the question since I got mine 4 months before my interview).

But the instruction packet I got states this:

The certificate issued for our present place of residence must have been issued within the 12 months preceding the date of your fnal visa appointment in Montreal....

I got the above on "Canada Packet 3 Supplement" page 3.

I think on the Packet 3 it asks for an RCMP certified criminal records check (I'm at work so I can't verify this at the moment).

If this is accurate... then if you go to the RCMP website here http://www.rcmp.ca/crimrec/finger2_e.htm , the first thing that is required on "HOW TO OBTAIN A CERTIFIED CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK" is "1) Full set of fingerprints required".

Which is confusing, since some people say that the fingerprints are not required. So if it is not required, I would think that going to the Ottawa police for instance and asking them for a record check under name only, and its done Canada wide, would suffice.

I'm going wacko  hehe :D

I'm just trying to clarify this for the people who are going to do this part now. Since I have done both myself. The local police department check and the RCMP certified check with fingerprints (which I'm still waiting for after 2 months).

:)

There are two types of RCMP checks, one with fingerprints which can take up to several months and one which is without which is a Canada-wide name search which takes only a few minutes at the local office. The one with fingerprints is only required if you have a criminal record. Try not to get hung up on the names the embassy forms call them; if you don't have a criminal record the embassy only needs the Canada-wide name check.

As for RCMP versus local police, it's my understanding the local police will search your local records plus the RCMP database. For some, depending on location, it might be preferable to go locally. In my case, the RCMP office in Vancouver was 30 minutes drive away and charged me $20. My local police was 5 minutes away and wanted to charge me $70. I took a little drive. ;)

International checks need the fingerprints. And take as long as they want.

I still laugh when I see this post. Seems to come up weekly and it gets blown out of proportion, lol Best of luck all

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I tried to get it done in advance.. just went to the RCMP office this past Friday. She said I couldn't just walk in off the street to get (my own) criminal record check, it had to be requested by someone, and that it costs $42. their website says $20. But she also said it only takes 20 minutes and I may as well wait until I get my packet from the embassy.

I still don't see why I can't just walk in off the street and pay for my own check, but whatever.

04/13/06 - I-129F mailed

04/18/06 - NOA1

To my understanding, it's only needed if you have lived elsewhere for a year or more. However, you may want to take the word of someone who has actually received their instructions, lol.. instead of just lil ol me who is working off of past forum posts. :D

You only need a records check for any country where you have lived for 6 months or more, if I remember correctly.

Forwhwat it's worth, packet 3 was pretty specific on using the RCMP for the records check, so I decided to be safe and went with them instead of the local police.
