why not take pleasure in one's misfortune when they bring it upon themselves?

The fire department is a 'service' no different than that of a service tech at your local Best Buy. They don't fix your computer unless you pay them, just the same as this fire department won't work unless you paid your subscription.

Clearly that is the America Libertarians and Tea-party types [who are really libertarians in disguise] want. In other words, to take America back into the dark ages and turn it into a third world country.

The Mayor of the clown azz town claims it's no different to auto insurance. I honestly cannot even respond to that without violating the TOS.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Had they been legitimate capitalist rather than hillbilly tea-party / libertarian dumb f--s, they could have put out the fire and then billed the guy $700 or something.

Hows your math?

On average, how often do we experience house fires?

For the sake of argument lets say we average a house fire every 10 years.

10 years of paying 75 bucks would be $750

not paying by the month would only be $700.

Lesson learned here, even if your home catches on fire every decade you will still be more wise to just pay the $700 fee at the time of fire.

Q: If I don't have the $700 at the time of the fire... do they still put it out...if I promise to pay?

I understand your point but realistically these things should be rolled into taxes. Smaller and financially poorer counties should all merge their service, like any corporation would do of course.

It's absolutely ridiculous that something like this would happen in a country that is supposed to be first world. Only in a third shitty world country would you read of such stories. And only Liberteapartians would look at this and say, "hey, what's the big deal, he didn't pay..".

that's not entirely possible.

When your county spans anywhere from 25-50 miles north/south/east/west at times you can't expect residents to share a fire service, etc. even if you manage to merge monies together, they wouldn't add up enough to operate several different fire stations within an X mile radius that would be feasible to each community. Someone would get screwed over.

I agree with your premise, but it's not necessarily plausible when you consider the expenses.

Of course, this is why many communities have a volunteer fire service as well....

One of the great things about this country is.... you can find a community that suites your lifestyle.

Even for those who want to live in a place with no promise of a fire truck.

I suspect these areas are few in number and when you choose to live in such a place... this is what you have.

You and I would consider fire service a basic roll of Government, if volunteers can't be rounded up to man a station.

Speaking of.... Volunteer Stations do a heck of a job for very little money serving many towns all across the country.

it's positively demented.

the story i read says when he originally called 911, they referred to a list, said his name wasn't on there as having paid up, and therefore refused to send anyone out. for anyone who thinks this is ok, have they ever been on the wrong end of a bank error, or had a utility company make an error with one of your bills, showing on their end that it hasn't been paid up so you have to dig up the canceled check to prove that you did indeed pay it? what if their list was incorrect, or not up to date? or if his payment had arrived that day, but hadn't been processed yet? even if you can swallow the bs ethics of a group of supposed firefighters letting an entire house burn down over $75, a house on fire is a hell of a thing to take a gamble on, and be confident enough in yr record keeping and accounting that you'd risk the liability of someone's house burning to the ground over $75. did they even ask if any human being's life was in danger on this property before they chose not to respond? one would hope so, but who knows when yr dealing with people who would let an entire house burn down for want of $75. this is staggeringly stupid, and gross.

I thought Beck was a Christians Conservative. Aren't they supposed to be compassionate? Now if it was a Muslim's or **'s house being burned, I could understand his outrage. But this guy wasn't Muslims or gay. Or maybe he was. You know one of them there crypto-gay-Muslims like Bam-Bam.

Is anyone else as tired and sick of the blatant hypocrisy displayed by Christians/Right? You have these staunch gay-haters being caught having gay sex in airports. You have these staunch advocates of family value being married 4 times and cheating every single time. Newt and Rush, I'm looking at you. To Beck's credit he hasn't been caught having gay sex. Yet. Universal Law of Karma dictates that he will be caught soon doing just that.

Then you have Lou Dobbs who hates Mexicans/Immigrants. But he employs them for his lawn care and his horse-care. I wonder what he'd do if he realized he hired Mexican gay Muslims to take care of his sprawling 300-acre lawn.

says the same guy who was rooting for single payer healthcare one year ago.

I am still saying that the only viable solution is single payer healthcare. This is the result of a structural problem created by government, and the unreasonable expectations of society in general. Unless you want to scrap the whole healthcare delivery system as it exists, and expect society to lower their expectations in general, there is no other solution that would work.

If a doctor wants to render services free of charge to an individual, that is charity. If society expects him to do it, that is conscription.

Tell us more about these unreasonable expectations of society.

Charity is an individual act, not conscription by society in general.
Yes. Everyone has a fire truck or two in their pocket that they'll use to give charity when houses are burning. -rolls eyes- Why is it so hard for your kind to understand that the government is there to serve the people? And it serves the people by providing many things we need but we cannot get individually, such as police services, fire services, national defense, and increasingly healthcare? Why does your body burn and your mind ache to see your neighbor being fed and treated with your tax money?

What can't we be charitable collectively as a nation? Why can't we feed our poor, our old, our young? Why can't we treat their medical agonies? Why can't we give people some help when they're on their bad leg?
