Looking for other self-employed immigrants for advice and sharing :)

We had our successful AOS interview today, my EAD only came last Friday.

I will be self-employed, my skills are such that I'll be promoting myself independently, not working for a company. My career involves developing a clientele base that I will be visiting on a basically 6-8 week schedule.

I would love input on taxation issues, and health insurance issues. My biggest issue is that my job is considered quite dangerous, so health insurance will be extremely expensive

Your question has nothing to do with being an immigrant. Same tax laws for everyone.

Consult with a CPA about how you should handle taxes, filing, etc.

Talk with an independent insurance agent (not affiliated with one company) regarding health insurance costs and coverage.

You'll have to be a bit more specific in regard to your job.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Yes, you're right, sorry. I have been doing some research, but wondered if there were other self employed folks here.

I'm a farrier.

I'm self employed. Doing commercial photography. This is my website, www.prodigitalimagery.com. Would put more photos of my work on it.

Regarding your question, I have my own CPA to do my tax. I just have to make sure that i have proper book keeping and she does the rest.

On health insurance, since my husband has a very good health (medical, dental, eye) insurance from his employer, i just avail of it as his dependent.

On my other insurance concern, i.e. liability, i'm a member of a photography group and i'm able to avail of special discounts.

Glad to know that there is another self employed member in visajourney. Lets PM.

I would suggest that you find an association for your particular field. You might be able to avail of some benefits from the organization.

Your gonna pay out the nose for health insurance, if you get good insurance.

Don't be surprised to pay close to $500 per month for good health insurance, even if you had a regular job.

Taxation - Consult a CPA.

I'm self employed, being a travel agent. I did my own taxation but you can hire CPA to make it easier for you. About health insurance, you can be dependent on your spouse insurance or research some insurance company that not pricey at all. I know Health Insurance here in USA costs too much, ours is $600/month for a family of four.

Hi TyandAllie. Just a brief question how does one start a company with an EAD or GC? I plan to work as a freelance creative agency.
