Shouldn't we be providing better education, health care, housing and training schemes to ensure that these people make it out of the poverty trap? The idea of upward mobility to some one in a project in Detroit is laughable ... really ... if you believe otherwise then I'm sorry but you're just living in a dream land!!!

Where have you been?

We have been doing this very thing for more than 40 years. In my city Poor kids are funded at nearly twice the level as the middle income areas.

Poor people last time I checked don't even pay a co-pay for their healthcare.

We have lots of opportunity for training. Even those who don't take advantage of that education (At twice the cost of suburban schools) and should they drop out, they can still enroll in the many Government training programs.

The problem is..... What they need, the Government can't provide, stable 2 parent families.

The crumbs you provide people hardly amounts to adequate examples of meaningful aid. How do food stamps compare to an unemployed family in AUS receiving $1,645 USD a month? Then add in rent assistance, $5 medication, zero co-pay or health care costs etc.

I'll be the first to say some people are not interested in leaving the squalor, but do not pretend that the breadcrumbs you provide Americans in faux assistance, amounts to legitimate welfare.

PS Laissez-faire parenting comes with the territory here.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

"Bread crumbs?"

Food stamps is not breadcrumbs in fact it is so lavish, the recipient need never contribute a dime to feeding ones self.

I also pointed out these money put out to educate these folks is double the overpriced amount we put out for a standard education.

There are also many programs to pay for elect, heating oil, child care, wic, afterschool. on and on.

Look if you Aussies enjoy braggin rights to the most generous welfare programs be may guest ... but it might just be a reflection of the high cost of living "over there" and nothing more.

$1,645 in cash per month for two people in AUS [even more with kids] versus $403 a month for a family of three. What a bloody joke. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves, especially anyone who claims to be religious. The cost of developing one jet F35 approaches $400,000,000,000 and its still not developed, now add in purchasing the planes, yet you refuse to provide your citizens with genuine assistance. It's a bloody disgrace Danno.

Nevertheless, surely if all the Tea-party / Libertarian rhetoric was true, then they would have a country of poor unemployed slackers. Never in US history has it had an adequate welfare system, so when I hear rants about Obama turning the country socialist, I cannot help but laugh. Then when I illustrate that the countries you guys deems socialist are beating the average Joe here fiscally [wealth wise], you guys go off on pointless tangents.

The sheer poverty in this country, one of the worst amongst the first world, illustrates that you do not provide your people with an adequate welfare system.

$403 a month???

Where did you get that number from?

Thats what a family of three gets in food stamps alone.

How do these "food stamps" compare to $1,645 USD in cash? Surely such "Socialists", as we like to use that to describe anything different, should be bankrupt and some form of Soviet eastern block by now right?

Even the poor in Australia are superior to the poor in America.

$1,645 versus $408. You do the math...

PS Don't forget health care is covered, plus they receive rent assistance. ;)
