hi fellow vj members i had a question to those who brought their loved one with a k1 visa.how soon after their point of entry did you apply for their social security number.i have had some conflicting info i have been told that k1 visa beneficiary are not given a social security number until an EAD has been granted whilst others have got it much earlier.the main reason i am asking is that to marry my fiancee in the state of New Mexico its a requirement that we all need the social security number.

My fiancee (now wife) got her SSN 10 days after entry.

My advice would be to wait a week or two after POE, by then her name should be in the SAVE database that SSA uses to verify immigration status. They should be able to tell you right away if her name comes up in SAVE. If her name is not yet in SAVE, then come back after several days rather than letting it go into manual processing which can delay things by several weeks. Make sure to get the clerk's name, and hang onto the letter they give you that says your fiancee applied for an SSN. It took one more visit for us, but on the second visit (10 days after POE) they printed an info page which gave us the SSN well before the printed SSN card arrived.

We waited three weeks and had it in another week.

In AZ, there is a space for a SSN to be placed for both parties, but we just said that he wasn't a US citizen and didn't have one, and the lady filling it all out quite happily left it blank. If you're like us, looking to get married before the SSN is available (in our case, marriage 9 days after POE, so no time to wait for SAVE and then the SSN in the mail), you should try this. Go and stand in front of someone and be clear about her not having one at all to give them. If they still give you trouble, press for a supervisor.

We had to wait until the AOS was done to get her SSN because we got married 2 days after her POE (New Year's 2009)

and applied for the SSN less than a week later. The K-1 visa SSN eligibility has to show up in their computer and it did

not because it was too soon after the POE.

They didn't notify us in a timely way that it was rejected so we were at the 3 month past POE date and ineligible

on that basis - only after the AOS did she re-apply.

You should wait about 2 weeks after the POE and then apply for her SSN before you marry.

After you marry you just change her name with the SS Administration.
