Greetings,

My name is Shannon and I recently married an amazing man who lives in the United States (I am Canadian). I want to move to be with him but I am looking into non-lawyer options prior to paying the fees for the assistance.

I thought I would be going with the K3 route but then I see the IR-1/CR-1 Visa and now I am confused (already :( ...)

I want to remain in Canada and work until I am legally able to work in the United States. I am looking for the cheapest and fastest way possible. It's really important that I am able to work and get a job as soon as possible as I will have some debt and my husband isn't in the financial position to cover his bills AND mine.

Does anyone have any advice and how to even begin? It's all so overwhelming... :(

Just so you know, the only consulate that deals with Cr-1 spousal visas is Montreal and they are terribly backed up. You're looking at 8-12 months from start to finish.

As posted above, to be able to work as soon as you enter the US you want to follow the IR1/CR1 path.

Unfortunately there really isn't a "fast" way to get through the process. With the wait for interviews at Montreal you are looking at approximately 8-12 months as canadian-wife posted.

Read through the guides and familiarize yourself with the process. Unless you have a complicated case it is certainly possible to navigate the process without a lawyer (most of us have :) )

fast and cheap? the two of you move to Malaysia, work for Multi-National Corporations in Kuala Lumpur for a year, then file the I-130 via DCF into the US Embassy there in Malaysia, return to USA about 15 to 16 months after arrival in Malaysia.

I've not heard of anything labelled 'fast and cheap', really, when it comes to doing immigration stuff.

Fast? rarely.

Cheap? Can be, if no attorney involvement

You can have it good, fast or cheap - PICK 2. What's left is the bit you really needed for perfection, and it's mostly unattainable.

Cheap well that would be sticking with us, We dont charge for advice or help! However you will still need to pay all the cr-1 fees. Unfortunately the above posters are right, montreal is backed up but its not that bad if you think of the end result. One year to be with your loved one for good :) well 12-14 months. I suggust you read up on the guides and then get started as soon as possible and when you get to the second stage you can do electronic procssing to try to cut off some time. Anyways good luck :)
