Not sure the logic of comparing grounds of employment for a school teacher, to people being free to manage their own safety.

Are we talking about the principle here...... or the degree to which this school has taken it?

I mean do you believe a teacher should be free to moonlight as a pornstar or stripper?

3rd hand smoke-the residual chemicals from smoking that permeates smokers' hair, skin, and clothing-are triggers for children with asthma and allergies. it can cause flare-ups of these very common in childhood ailments, and i imagine a child with asthma or allergies being stuck in a classroom with a teacher that smells like smoke, even the faintest bit, is a problem. pornography and stripping don't really carry the same health implications as those of smokers.

Pornography and stripping are public and for hire. Totally different from your sexual practices that happen behind closed doors. The school should have a say over the former, but not the latter.

i would not have voted for obama for all the tea in china. but i do take care of kids with asthma and allergies, and give them breathing treatments when they have flare ups, all the while their parents clothes and hair reek of smoke, but they insist they never smoke in front of their kids.

"many teachers don't even have kids"---good grief, that's not what i am talking about. teachers are surrounded by other people's children in their classrooms, from 830-3. while it may invade their home life, the rationale for teachers being prohibited from smoking includes the fact that the chemicals from their disgusting habit can invade their classrooms, where children are present, via their bodies, clothing and hair. while the smell may not even be detectable, chemicals that trigger allergies and asthma attacks can be. it has the potential to make susceptible kids sick.

not just teachers' kids, but the kids who are stuck in their classrooms all day. i related my experience of kids' allergies and asthma flare-ups at the dr's office whose parents hair and coats smell like smoke because the majority of the time parents take their kids to the dr. but parents are not the only smokers children can be exposed to obviously. they can also be exposed for hours and hours at school, and be sickened by it, even if their parents don't smoke at all.

While the story as reported here seems odd, .. and just to argue a point I would remind you that this is not just some random woman we are talking about here, we are talking about a Government employee.

There are certain limitations one places one ones self when you take on certain job positions. When a person is a teacher or other key position in a school system your life both in school and away from school can not call into question your moral fitness... what exactly that means depends on the district you work for.

I know you don't like it but.... thats the way it works.

In fact, some school districts require that teachers not even smoke..... even in their own bedrooms.

Most people do not care to have the values from their home challenged by a classroom teacher.

A teacher whose comments and inferences are insulated from challenge by the nature of the classroom.

Never forget, it's the Student who is mandated by the force of law to be there, not the teacher.

Protection of the Students rights are higher than are the rights of the teacher.... who is there voluntarily.

Look, I know where you stand on this point and you know where I do as well, so no sense rehashing old debates here.
