I am now the Free Republic of Alexbania. I joined the region of "Europe" after a move from the Pacific. So far I've made voting voluntary. Maybe I should have stayed at the bar tonight

I am now the Borderlands of Lentilsoupia. I'm in the North Pacific, but planning to move as soon I've found a better region. Voting is mandatory for my subjects.

How did you come to that decision?

edit for typo

You mean making voting mandatory? It's easy. What irks me most about "democratic" countries like the US is the fact that the government is never representative of the majority of people because only 60% or so vote. Thus, the current administration in this country was only voted into office by 30% of the population, thus only representing less than 1/3 of the populace.

The only way to solve this lack of true democracy is to make voting mandatory. If everyone has to show up to vote, then elections represent the will of the majority. People opposed to voting can still turn in empty ballots or the like.

But what if mandatory voting makes candidates pander to the lowest common denominator and turns elections into a complete spectacle, with absolutely nothing of substance ever said by any candidate?

Oh, wait...

ps How do you get your issue decision to go through? Mine is still pending for some reason.

Yeah, I don't think making voting mandatory will necessarily decrease the quality of political campaigning, given the sorry state it is in already. I'm hoping that it will improve political discourse since the issues currently presented as the biggest threat to the country are obviously not what makes voters tick.

P.S.: You have to wait for a day and the issue will be approved by then.
