It works good about half the time for me. I don't blame the device so much as I do the poor internet connections in my wife's region. I have troubles at times just trying to keep a decent Yahoo chat connection. When it is working it sounds just like a regular phone.

We've been using Magic Jack for about 6 months.

It's UNREAL. It's as good as calling on a landline[i guess you are]. Bad thing is if you are in the process there's no records of the calls for USEM!

Absolutely! MagicJack helped keep my husband and I sane throughout the K3/K4 process while we were in the Philippines. We left the unit back home so my parents and my sister can call me here in the US and my brother in Canada.

You need a broadband Internet connection, a PC with excellent specs and (this is key) a powered USB hub (it helps keep the calls stable, compared to using the USB port that comes with a standard PC).

yep we pay for one in Makati where Jo lives, one in Cavite and one in Cebu where her sister lives.

she calls her family my mom my daughters her soon to be grand kids me etc. never had a problem unless the internet was down.

May be better if you purchase a unit and send it to them (you will have to either order one directly from magicjack.com and get it shipped to you or buy the unit from Radio Shack or Wal-Mart...either way you will have to ship it to the Philippines; Magic Jack only ships to US, Canada, Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands). When I first heard about it in 2008, we got it directly from a guy who lived in NY (he brought home several units and we first bought them to use at work).

If you decide to get it through a Philippine reseller, make sure they are reputable. Did a Google search and found this ad posted on 88DB.com (it's an affiliate of JobsDB Philippines) http://ph.88db.com/Buy-Sell/Consumer-Electronics/ad-517371/

We sent a magic jack to Ailenes sister, and it works great. The only thing about magic jack is...your pc has to be on to use it.

We sent a vonage box to Ailene's parents and it works great too. The pc doesn't have to on, but it costs more monthly.

Elsa and I use Ooma...costs upfront but can use it without the computer being on all the time. Free calls to anywhere in the US too. Might be worth the look see. We tried magic jack and it didn't work for us too well....may be case specific. Best of luck!!!!!!

Anyone in USA been able to figure out how to make Magic Jack work as a dedicated Fax Line in USA?

I tried that myself, and the short and ugly answer is that MagicJack may or may not work when used as a fax line because fax systems are analog in nature, and MagicJack works on a digital system.

There are online services like eFax you can subscribe to for a nominal fee.

I USED MAGIC JACK THE WHOLE 18 Mongths I was In Baguio City Awaiting my wife's Visa to TALK to FAMILY In NEW YORK, IS sometimes cutting out cuz internet is slow in Philippines but Family called Me and I called them anytime we wanted. You Should get a USA telephone Area Code Assigned to Magic Jack Before Connecting it in Philippines.

YES, BUY IT IN USA and set it up at your computer first, I set mine up here in New York in March, 2008, went to Baguio City in September, 2008, USED magic Jack for 18 months until March 15, 2010 in Philippines. you set up in USA so it assigns a USA phone area code and marries it to a IP address ahead of time, then send to Family in Philippines, they need fast internet there, I had ( 512Kbs ) Fastest my company there offered and sometimes had problems with calls, butg is well worth it to communicate with Family, I still have Mine here in USA and it is my Home Number, never changes number in 2 1/2 years of using it !!!
