Social Security Number...how long should it take

Carlos entered the US on the 12 Jan..we applied for his SSN on the 25th...well past the 10 days they say to wait...and we STILL have not recieved the card. I called the customer dis-service line and they could only tell me to wait till 25FEB and go back to the social security office to take a number, wait 2.5 hours just to ask where's my card at?? I changed my name and got mine within a week.

What's up with this??

He is only using is first last name for social security purposes, although the passport etc has both his last names ( latin american way puts dad's surname then mother's surname)

Would that be a problem? On immigration stuff he is Carlos ZZZZZ AAAAA but for SS purposes in the US we just want him to be Carlos ZZZZZZ

I waited 150 days because of the general incompetency at the Aurora, IL office.

Have you received your confirmation letter or any sort of correspondence in the mail? Were you sent off with the instruction sheet? I recommend that if you have not received anything after 10 business days, go down to the office and ask them the status of the SSN. I would also make sure to find out whether or not they've sent off the proper forms and that they aren't waiting on a signature (like mine were! :/).

It's a hassle, but they should be able to confirm with you whether or not he's in the system, if they've sent any paperwork off for processing or they're waiting on SAVE issues, etc.

The SSA office isn't supposed to let him do that unless his name is on the I-94 like that, since the I-94 with the passport is his idenity document.

6. Hispanic Names

Some Hispanics display their names differently than the usual U.S. custom of first name, middle name and a single surname (usually the father's family name).

EXAMPLE 1: A man ordinarily uses his given name with his father's surname followed by his mother's maiden name, e.g., “Juan Santiago Perez” , son of Arturo Santiago and Elena Perez.

Make sure the applicant's name on line 1 agrees with the name as shown on the document used to establish identity.

6. Documents for Adult Age 18 and Older

Request a current U.S. immigration document and an unexpired foreign passport.

You need to remember that SSA will not assign an SSN or issue a card if his status has expired or is within 14 days of expiring.

K-1 status is good for 90 days, so that only gives him 76 days to be assigned an SSN and issued a card. After that time he will need an EAD or I-551 card to establish authorization to work. Before that time the

I-94 showing K-1 status is the document that establishes authorization to work for SSN purposes.

The status/documents of all aliens must be verified before SSA will assign an SSN and/or issue a card and the 14 day limit applies even if he passes the 76th day while waiting for his status to be verified.

The SSA office will try to verify his status through the SAVE system while she is in the office. If they can't, they will send a form G-845 to immigration for manual verification. This could delay the assigning of an SSN and/or issuing a card for weeks and some times months.

If the SSA office does send the G-845, suggest that he go back to the SSA office no more than once a week with your documents to (1) ask them to check SAVE again (2) ask if they sent a G-845 (3) if yes, did it come back (4) after 30 days ask if they have followed up on the G-845 by calling or sending another mark "second request."

STEP 6

DHS should respond to SSA within 15 federal work days after receiving

the Form G-845. If DHS does not respond within 15 federal work days from

the receipt of the G-845 from SSA, follow-up with the DHS, USCIS

Immigration Status office. (Allow 15 days plus five additional federal

work days of mail time for the G-845 to be received at and returned from

DHS.

Follow local practice to follow-up with DHS. Some SSA offices have an

arrangement with the DHS, USCIS office to telephone for the follow-up

contact; other SSA offices send a copy of the original G-845 annotated

“second request.”) If the DHS response is still not received within 15

My husband's SSN took exactly 14 days to arrive. When he had been worried about the card and called to find out information, they basically told him to just wait, because they didn't have any more information for him. But it did come eventually.

Remember that it's 10 working days too, that was our delay that we didn't think about.

Claudeth's took about 10 days when she first applied. After we were married she changed her name and that took about 6 weeks because they have to validate it with USCIS. Good luck
