I-864 Tax Return Question

Has anyone had no or very low income and not had to file a tax return and therefore have no tax return to show as part of the I-864 requirements? This is what it says in the directions of the form for those who didn't have to file:

"If you were not required to file a Federal income tax return under U.S. tax law because your income was too low, attach a written explanation."

So do you guys think it's sufficient for me to just say I didn't make enough money b/c I was unemployed so I didn't need to file? Or do you need to do anything more?

Anyone been in this situation and are willing to share how you handled this?

Thanks!!

Errrrrr,

even if you had no income you should file. you still get GST and provincial tax refunds etc. i have not worked since 2008 and i always filed, and always got money back.

you can still file for the years that you did not. just download a copy of those years and fill it out and send it in.

It's also one of the only ways for the gov't to update your info for Elections Canada.

No offense Kimbear, but the OP was talking about filing US taxes. Canadian taxes are not considered at all when it comes to I-364 / I-864...

My fiancee is a full-time student, so I'm interested in the answer to this as well.
