My wife's gold is definitely worth more than $10000. Let's say that it's $20,000. Let's say we declare it. What's going to be the fine or penalty? Is it only going to be fine? If so, how much? Would it carry a mandatory prison term?

Personal items can bring upto worth of $10,000.00. If you're talking about BD, sometimes they do check...sometimes not. but you can carry atleast half of by wearing and rest of them in the hand bag. Off Topic:- If anybody wants to transfer huge amount of cash from outside the U.S to here, best method is bank wire transfer and one can break this limit.

Don't bank wire transfers have exorbitant fees? We have a joint domiciliary account in Nigeria that we will want to transfer money into but still don't know which bank here would be the best to use in terms of int'l wire transfers...they fees are soooo high!!!! Any suggestions?

Don't bank wire transfers have exorbitant fees? We have a joint domiciliary account in Nigeria that we will want to transfer money into but still don't know which bank here would be the best to use in terms of int'l wire transfers...they fees are soooo high!!!! Any suggestions?

I don't know the fee the bank charges in Nigeria.

In India, when my father transferred $17K+ he was incurred only Rs.500 (around $11) and my bank (Digital Federal Credit Union) doesn't charge any incoming wire fee.

So, most probably, you will not incur any fee in the U.S. Check it out, the cheapest method from Nigerian bank or Money transfer agencies.

Also, some countries will have no limit on money transfer amount out. India, it was up to $25K in a single transaction few years back. It was even lesser long time back, now the rules are slightly liberalized.

I called DOS today morning when I was leaving to a work but they seems more busier than NVC could not get anyone on phone, Well I'll try tomorrow. I spoke to one of the nerdy parrot operator of NVC today and he said they will be scheduling interview in the second week of the month for the following month.

And that concludes my update of today.

Debby I personally haven't sent money to Nigeria. However, I have received wire transfer from Nigeria. Your bank will charge you a fee for incoming transfers. Federal Credit Unions charges less for incoming transfers.
