Reason - long story, but short presentation

We (ex-wife and me) arrived in H1 and H4 visas back in 1999. Since she (my lovely ex-wife!) was in H4, she was not eligible to receive SSN. So, she had ITIN and we had to file manually for 1999. But, for 2000, we filed electronically with her ITIN and it was accepted. She got her SSN in 2002, when we both got GC. We filed again for 2001 electronically with her ITIN.

Footenote: Now, my memory is reset and I am now in 2011!

Yeah. Both of them were filed electronically. If I try to correct the tax return for my dead, it comes back as saying my sister has been already claimed by someone else. So do you think I need to do two things:

a) File an amendment for my sister saying she could be claimed by someone else.

b) File an amendment for my father claiming my sister.

Do b only if a is accepted. It's $1,500. If I could get it back for my father, he'd be rather happy.

PS: I just found out there's $19.78 left on my T-Mobile VISA gift card. I was thinking I'd have only a few pennies left. I'm pleasantly surprised and tonight I DINE.

Though my experience with IRS is very limited, YES, you can do it. First the girl has to pay back with what she got already as refund. This one need to be mailed and has to wait for a month or 45 days until the system is updated Then, the DAD can mail his amendent and can get his refund back [which again need to be mailed and wait longer to get the refund]

Patience...... Patience .......Patience

Indigo - yes you can first file an amendment for your sister and then when it gets updated you can again file another amendment for your father.

FYI, last year I filed 3 yrs. amendmend ie. for 2007, 08 and 09 adding my wife's ITIN and got few hundreds more refunds for all those 3 yrs.

Guys, I have my saving account with my bank and I also get interest (very little) every month. I think for 2010 I earned not more than $10 or $20 in total as interest. My question is should I report this little interest income in my tax return? Do I get 1099 from my bank for this income? Any input will be appreciated

If any interest or dividend is more than $1, you are required to report it. It will be in 1099-INT or in 1099-DIV.

Again analysis

1) If you wait until Jan end, you can copy paste from those forms

2) If your patience ran out (or better should I say, please IRS don't take the interest from my refund for 1 more week, else I'll send you a 1099-INT ), get the exact amount from your bank or brokerage firm and feed it.

Ok, to provide them little peace of mind, I increased $5K from my initial offer

My friend who works in JP Morgan's advice - Say if seller asks $300K, you put an offer for $200K. When they reduce to $290K, you reduce to $190K. At every reduction, you proportionally go down. Then when they hit $200K, sign the contract. That's what he defines the buyer's market! Superb low interest rate of 3.375% for 5/1 ARM for 30 years, Wow!

For you wife, you file a W7. Same for your children. One for each person. Also, need copies of passport to prove identities. Attach with tax return and mail it to the the paper filing address. Wait 4 months and reap sweet reward. Or basically your own money.
