The reason I choose CPA to do my taxes is I was not aware of the fact that I could do "Married filling jointly" even my spouse is abroad. He (CPA) is the one who advised me that it's possible and he will take care of it. Since I was so excited to know that I will have much more refund than filling "single" I simply agreed to spend $100 for CPA charge. Now I realize that I could do that myself and save $100.

I used H&R Block's TaxCut. So far I have been using their online free application. This year they sent me a software in a DVD with five free filing code. I'll use that. The above link I got from IRS.gov. If you go to IRS site, you'll find more. I'm thinking your taxes are fairly straight-forward and simple. In that case, you can use any of the major tax software websites. They'll have a free version for you.

Ladydare, I never used the linked site. But I got the link from IRS.gov. So I imagine it'd have itemized deduction option also.

I am in need of a suggestion here.

I have been filing my tax past three years as "Married Filling Jointly" through one of the CPA in my area. I have my wife's ITIN # from last year. As you all know that a visa interview has been scheduled for Feb 15 and as soon as she receives her passport back with visa she will be flying for USA within a week. Again I also hope that she will have her SS # sometimes before April 15.

This year I am trying not to pay $100 to CPA and want to do my tax "Married filling jointly" electronically using one of the Tax software available in the market.

My questions are :-

1. Can I use ITIN for my wife in electronic filling or do I need to have SS #?

2. Using ITIN instead of SS makes any difference? specially in return?

3. Should I go ahead and do it using her ITIN or should I wait until she has her SS# sometimes in March?

4. If so which tax software is reliable and user friendly?

Hoping to have a reliable answer from my fellow VJ'ers Thanks.

Malvika, here are my 2 cents

1) If you have used ITIN in the past, probably tax software will recognize it. But it won't, if it is the first time. I think your wife will have SSN before tax filing deadline.

2) No difference.

3) Wait until SSN arrives because SSN will be more easy to understand by the tax software

4) Most tax softwares are good - I have used Turbotax and H&R Block in the past. I personally like Turbotax.

Another off topic about taxes - This year onwards some states like NY, NJ etc., do not send 1099-G paper copy. So, if you need it during this tax year time, you need to download it from their website.

NY state saves $700K by doing this.

Check out your state website as well, if you are waiting for 1099-G.

If you are married on or before Dec 31, 2010, you are qualified to file Married Filing Jointly (MFJ) for the year 2010.

You need to file your 1040 MFJ by mailing it to Austin, Texas Address (online filing is NOT possible):

Internal Revenue Service

ITIN Operation

P.O. Box 149342

Austin, TX 78714-9342

Her SSN column will be blank in 1040.

Include her completed and signed W-7 form with supporting documents such as her passport copy etc. along with 1040.

Don't forget to include her foreign income in 1040, if any. For MFJ, worldwide income must be shown.

I called NVC in morning today their system were saying NVC is closed today friday 2011 because of the inclement weather no operator assistant will not be available during this time and blah blah blah, I got so upset after hearing this message. one more day off in NVC.

Then I called NVC again(just for fun) at 3:30 pm PST also spoke to the operator, she said right now they are reviewing package and I should hear something after 2 weeks . 2 weeks is just too much. I hope it gets done earlier.

Loto, I have used ITIN in the past but only did paper filling as the accountant said electronics filling is not possible without SS#. THanks for your advise Loto.
