For the last few weeks, no update from her She'll be exploring the U.S life

Some good news and bad news from me.

Bad news first (not an eternal pessimist!): My package to India has not arrived yet. Today, USPS rep called me and they wanted to track with Indian postal system because the package is left from the U.S on the next day of mailing. They will mail a 'claim form' to my address and I need to fill it out. Then they will co-ordinate with Indian f'ng postal system and investigate

Good news: I have been a Consultant with my current client here for the last 3 years. Due to the client policy, they normally don't give such a long period to the Consultants. My boss offered and forced me to join here in a permanent position. I politely denied it because of the pay check. So, for the last 2 weeks, I was actively searching for new contract and got 3 offers - Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and NY life. Today, I spoke to my boss that my last day is by the end of this year and I am moving out. He immediately talked to his boss and got back to me to continue some more time as Consultant here. I told him, ok, if you give me another full year. They are talking each other and going to override the policy now

Secondly, congrats on your contract extension! In this economy, that is quite an accomplishment to get these companies to agree to your terms...you must be quite good at what you do !

@svenkatc, I don't know if the package will reach there. Anyway, I almost lost my hopes now. But I will proceed with their investigation.

No, I didn't take any insurance. Even if I have insurance and lost the packet, the originals cannot be recovered, right?

My wife and family are leaving on Sunday flight to Chennai from Cochin. Ok, you may not be knowing those locations. It is around 1 hour by air between our home to Consulate. So, tomorrow (Sat) is the last day for them to receive the package. They will stay at Chennai the entire week to complete the medical, to collect daughter's Indian OCI from FRRO, Interview and to collect the passport (but this is only if interview is passed ) and will come back on Sat morning flight back.

Agree Loto, the insurance money will not compensate for the loss of originals. I believe that every package shipped within the UPS system is covered by up to $100.00 of insurance protection AT NO COST (with very few exclusions such as documents or perishables). Am assuming you mentioned the package contents to be documents. If you have not, then may be you can claim the $100 saying that you had something valuable inside the package. I have heard that the UPS drivers are generally very careless about the packages and UPS really does not have a way to make them accountable for losing the packages.

Lesson Learnt: Never use USPS for emergency or sending anything important.

Agree Loto, the insurance money will not compensate for the loss of originals. I only worry about just 2 originals - Naturalization Certificate and my birth certificate.

I have another original of the divorce decree. Religious marriage certificate original is collected by my wife again from Wakf board, so no worries on that too. No worries on 4 original affidavits from both parents, it can be made again. Remaining all were copies.

I-130, I-864 and DS-230 sets lost with NOA1 and NOA2.

Yea, understand those two are a pain to replace. I guess you have to file N-565 and pay $345 to get your replacement NC. I believe it takes anywhere between 6 months to a year. I have color xerox'es of my NC and am thinking you might have them too. You will probably need the NC number to re-apply for the new one.

As far as Indian BC's is concerned, I think you can request them to provide another original submitting your copy and saying that you lost your original. If you don't have the time for that, there is a TTK (Prestige pressure cooker) group provided India service site for NRI's (yourmaninindia.com). You provide them a nominal fee and they will work with the local authorities to get your BC. I have used them before for something else and they have been pretty good.

Ohhhhh.... my..... goodness 6 months to a year for a replacement and $345 on top of that that is crazy are they gonna print one letter per day and then walk it over to your house!!!! Unbelievable...

Yep, Gandhi's will work and knowing that you are from the US they might even ask for a few Jackson's or a Benjamin. and we all know that a few jackson's or a Benjamin work harder and faster than a lot of Gandhi's I have used them wisely to get property documents and pattas in India.

I asked the village officer to do the late registration of the birth (it was possible at that time) and issue my birth certificate. He told me it is very difficult and come back after a week or so. I just asked him to come outside and said - "Sir, just hold this and please don't think in wrong way. It is just my happiness." He accepted, it was Rs.100 ($2) but big money during those days He told me to come back in the evening to collect the birth certificate. Just 100 Gandhis!

At least the village officer knew something about the American dollar, I have an person in my village who keeps asking me for the dollar and whenever I show him the dollar bill, he is not completely convinced that it is a dollar, he thinks of the dollar like the pendant (colloquially, we call it dollar in India ) we were around the neck.
