SAN ANTONIO (AP) ― A federal program that automatically checks the immigration status of arrested people has gone statewide in Texas.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Wednesday that the fingerprint sharing program Secure Communities has been activated in all 254 counties in Texas as of this week. Many local jail bookings have used the program for years.

ICE says the program has led to more than 41,000 deportations of illegal immigrants nationwide. Critics say the program makes people fearful of reporting crimes and does not protect against racial profiling.

The Obama administration wants Secure Communities operating nationwide by 2013.

I guess I was naive, I thought all departments did this. The one that I work at has been doing it for quite some time. The problem is that most times, ICE will decline to take custody of the person, unless they are wanted of a serious crime. More commonly, they will go to trial and if convicted, ICE will deport them to serve their sentence in a jail of their home country.

41,000 illegal aliens deported out of the 12-20 million illegal aliens in the USA. What a joke. Is this the best that idiot Obama can do? He and his administration is a joke.

"Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentence: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave."

"...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

US Congresswoman Barbara Jordan (D-TX)

Testimony to the House Immigration Subcommittee, February 24, 1995

What about the Senators and house of Reps? The President is not some CEO, he doesn't just get to do whatever he wants.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Really? You're that blinded by partisan hack politics that you can't rationally respond? ICE has been under funded and impotent since it's inception. If you want full compliance and enforcement, you're going to need to start making cuts in areas like social security or, gasp, the military.

Seems to be exactly what Arizona is doing, sans the outrage.

No. Arizona is taking a more proactive approach and questioning people who look like they could be here illegally, (i.e. if your brown, the po po gonna hassle you). What the OP and what many other departments do is to run someone's status once they are in custody for an actual crime.

You didn't get the memo, then?

The 11 page ICE memo running through policy options to circumvent Congress and the Senate? VJ link here.

Go take a look and then tell me with a straight face whether your Congressmen or Senators will have a say in what happens.

How is it a distortion? The law allowed for the police to question people solely on the suspicion that they are illegal, well, at least it did until the courts placed a stay on that provision. With sheriff's like Joe Arcaipo directing officers to check the status of suspected illegal immigrants, you know the implications of that.

No, it allowed police to find out the status of someone only during a "legal stop". Being brown was never a legal stop.
