Hello friends,

How does one replace a damaged green card?

what is the process? and how long does it take?

my husband's green card got badly damaged. it is bent and in bad condition.

we barely received the letter and the green card came out damaged.

we received the card at our mailing address and the individual who was holding it for us did not take good care of it.

So the card was delivered in perfect shape but got damaged due to neglect on a family member's part.

please help......

You'd need to file an I-90.

You need to file an I-90 form (get it at the USCIS website) and check the box that says card has been damaged. I don't remember whether or not there is a fee for the replacement but you should file all of the info you need on the instructions form as well as the address and any supporting information you need to send in with your application. Good luck.

Sorry to know of this... but to replace the damaged card he should file the I-90 cost is $370.00 and takes 3-5 months to be received. He can file the form online by clicking below

LINK TO E-FILE

He will be required to set up a username and password.

Yes there will be a fee of $370.00 because the card was received in good condition and the OP said the family member did not take good care of the mail once received from the Postal Serv.

RICARDO4EVA2 is correct.

As long as the damage was not caused by USCIS or USPS, it will be difficult to convince them to replace it for free - you can give it a shot first though.

The last biometrics you did are valid for 15 months. Read the form instructions to see what you need to do for your particular situation.

Dont be Stresssed okay.. Let let the other family member/s pay for it.. heck that's what I'd do.. :bonk:

Ok.. you are not required to mail the card back.. No. Yes you will be required to pay the Full Fee. NOO you do not need to send ANY ofthe Adjustment of Status PAPERWORK... As for biometric I'm certain that you will be required to pay it again.. One person abve said that the biometris are Good for 15 months.. now that maybe true but this is a "totally" different case... So exapmple if you had fied for a replacement green card and it takes them 14 months to appove the case then NO a nother fingerprint is not required..

USCIS mailed me a freen card back in 2006 and I thought i was never received however someone in my house got the mail and did not tell me.. and yes i was required to refile and to pay the fees again.. GOOOOD things is .. it goes much quicker..

Hold on! Is this the new 10-yr card that was damaged or the first 2-year one?

If you're about to file for removal of conditions, don't bother getting a new card but go ahead and do the removal of conditions - that will get him the 10-yr card.

For I-751 you need a copy of the green card front and back - hope you made a copy of it before it got damaged.

If it's the 10-year one, I say hold on to it and simply file for naturalization when time comes - he can turn over the damaged card when he gets the citizenship certificate.

I think you and yer spouse should drag the 'offending family member' down to the local USCIS office during an infopass appointment, and squarely place the blame on this family member, in front of an Immigration Officer. Then ask the Immigration Officer if there is any federal charges to be filed on said family member for purposefully altering this federal document, then hand over the family member to the FBI, around the corner.

Soonish.

(I think it's the 10 year card that was damaged, from studying the timeline)

he still has a while for the naturalization.

what will he do to travel? we go to India on a yearly base as his parents live there.

also, this is his proof of permanent residency and he has to show that for school and work purposes. i don't think they would accept a completely bent card.

i love my sister in law...but am soooooo angry right now of what she has done to his card......even though it was unintentional.

If it is that damaged, I'd have sil pay for it. Other than that, it's stil a GC, though a bit bent.

For work - Driver License and SSN are sufficient (employer CAN NOT decide which document employee provides as proof of being work authorized). I use DL and SSN at all times.

For naturalization - it's 90 days before the 3 year permanent residency anniversary that he can send in his N-400 - don't know when you visit India every year, but you could time the visit so you go when he gets his US citizenship.
