A Manhattan Supreme Court justice came under fire Monday for granting probation to a city worker whoadmitted he had raped or sexually abused three teen girls under hiscare.

Manhattan District Attorney CyVance Jr. blasted the sentence Justice Cassandra Mullen gaveto Tony Simmons, 47, as "outrageously lenient."Prosecutors wanted Simmons to get at least a year behind bars. "Thiswas an egregious breach of the public's trust," Vance said.

Simmons, who worked for the cityDepartment of Juvenile Justice for 16 years, pleaded guilty to rapinga 15-year-old girl in a courthouse elevator, assaulting a 16-year-oldin a pantry and assaulting a 15-year-old in a waiting area. He mustserve 10years' probation and register as a sex offender.

What would a year behind bars do? Sex offenders like this guy are notorious for their high rates of recidivism (i think that's the word). Either lock them up forever or don't bother with a symbolic one-year prison stay.

He must serve 10years' probation and register as a sex offender.

Asking that he register as a sex offender is probably the best thing to do in terms of long-term reduction of any further contact between this guy and teenage girls.

If you mean he'd get raped, I don't see how that serves anything seeing how once he comes out he'll probably rape again and this time he'll have new viruses.

With jail rape out of the picture at least we know that our children would be a little safer for a year.

I think Charles was actually saying that (depending on mood) the other inmates may:
  • bump-off the perv
  • inflict some other injuries which will incapacitate him

either of which will serve as a very-permanent deterrent (euphemism).

Seems if someone wants to be a rapist that New York is the place to be.good.gif
Actually, across the border in Canada is more ideal for them--as shown by the cases of child-killers Harold Smeltzer (1 murder, Altadore neighbourhood of Calgary, 1980) and Cliff Olson (mass-murders, Vancouver, 1981)--both of whom were confined in solitary (Olson remains so) for the duration of their sentences--as mixing with the general prison-population of these two would certainly have ensured justice being done (they wouldn't have lasted two months).
