Mr Carter was taken to the Metro Health Hospital in Cleveland

Former US President Jimmy Carter is resting in a hospital after falling ill on a flight to Cleveland.

"He is resting comfortably and is expected to resume his book tour this week," press secretary Deanna Congileo said in a statement.

The former president was travelling to promote his new book White House Diary, which was released last week.

Mr Carter, was elected as the 39th US president in 1976, on a platform of political and personal integrity.

According to the website for Joseph-Beth Booksellers, Mr Carter was planning to attend a book signing in Cleveland in the US state of Ohio.

nice whitewashing of the events of 1953 in that ridiculous graphic. not to mention that said events of 1953 had ** all to do with jimmy carter.

most people can only hope to accomplish a fraction of what jimmy carter has anyways. since 1986, guinea worms have been over 99% eradicated, and the carter center is a huge reason why. he's done a sh!tload of good work in reducing river blindess too, one of the leading causes of blindness around the world. over 10 million people get treated for river blindness every year by the carter center-10 million people that might have gone blind otherwise. but yeah, keep talking sh!t.

I personally love his commitment to Habitat for Humanity. It is because of he and his wife's dedication to that philanthropy that H4H is now a household name. He's one of the few presidents who didn't just retire and say, "** it, I'm gonna play golf."

no one said the events in '53 did have anything to do with him - more like setting the stage for carter's catastrophe.

Actual events of 1952/1953 Iran:

• Mohd Moussadegh decided that Iran should be on a socialist plan--and then removed the Shah from power
• Moussadegh nationalised oil-holdings (which had been developped by US and British companies), angering Churchill--who then persuaded Eisenhower that Moussadegh needed to be removed (at the time US accounted for half of Iran's export trade--and a boycott of Iran would have forced Moussadegh to come to the table)
• Moussadegh was overthrown--far from being popularly-elected, he was in fact an unpopular dictator, and Iranians cheered when Moussadegh was overthrown (especially including a mid-50's-to-mid-60's-aged cleric Ruhallah Khomeini, who saw Moussadegh's socialism as all-too-similar to the communism of Iran's then northern neighbour Soviet Union--and thus, quite undesirable for Iran); but Shah had not exactly been popular earlier (and wasn't anymore than prior)
• flash-forward to 1979--protests against Shah, egged on by Khomeini (who had run afoul of Shah and fled to Baghdad, and later to Paris)--who conveniently used the very-dead Moussadegh as a "cause-martyr"
