I'm sure nearly 90% all have medical insurance, and I'm sure that just about everyone has there immigrating husband or wife put on the insurance as well.

So what I’m trying to get at is did your immigrating Husband or wife not have a SSN and is unable to get one at this time do to some unforeseen reason or complication.

Because my wife’s passport was lost for about 3 months and we were unable to get her SSN. I’m sure that they would still have to give the medical insurance benefits regardless if you are married. But I like to worry and stress about every single detail because I’m just crazy like that.:wacko::wacko:

My wife got her SSN a little more than three weeks after she got here but I have been unable to get insurance for her as the insurance companies (I have tried several) will not insure her until she is here for 6 months. One more month for us and we should be OK. Perhaps it is because I have an individual policy and am not on a group policy. It is kind of scary to be without insurance.

I didn't have my SSN until a month after our wedding, and I was put on Jerry's health insurance about two weeks before that. Having a SSN was not necessary in our experience, but as soon as I was able to get the SSN, I had to let the insurers know what it was.

I was in the same boat when my wife first came over. I was self-employed and had no health insurance at all because at my age (55 then), the premiums for anything other than a catastrophic policy were outrageous. I went without insurance for me and my adopted granddaughter for over two years and I would say that in that time I spent about half of what I would have spent on insurance on actual medical expenses and that included treating my granddaughters broken arm in the emergency room and her annual physical and shots.

Whem my wife and stepson arrived I took a job just so I could afford health insurance for my new family of four, especially since my wife wants to have a baby.

There are insurances available for visitors/K1s etc. without having a SSN - yes they do not cover much but you have a choice of as little as $60 a month for catastrophic coverage to much more. I had my fiancee covered with this on the day she landed - and after marriage I was able to add her to my insurance. If you do a search on VJ you will find links for the health insurance I used or google it.

However, currently I have just changed to a HDHC plan to cover both of us for $230 a month and have opened a HAS that allows me to use my own money for our use and avoid paying it all to insurance companies. (I had been paying $600 for the both of us - with a $270 subsidy - yes $870 total per month!)

The subsidy for me is lost with the new plan but despite that this is a fantastic deal - especially considering that I can take the money with me if I don't use it (at age 65) and till then its a savings account that grows or gets usedd as the need may arise.

I wish I had known of this before putting my wife on my insurance - let's see - I would already have about $5000 in the account instead of 0 (all went to the health insurance company - darn!) Good Luck

My husband is not here yet as we married in Turkey and are waiting for his visa. But I have added him to my health and life insruance at work already. They asked for a SSN but I said he does not have one so they left it blank and they sent a copy of our marriage certificate with the form that added him.

According to our rules on insurance I had to add him within 30 days of our marriage or wait until insurance open season happens we got married and in Feb and open season in Dec with it being activated in Jan. I am hoping he will be here before then but also hoping that maybe his physical for his interview might be somewhat covered with health insurance.

James didn't have a SSN yet when I put him on my health insurance. Come to think of it, I believe I promised to go tell them what it was when he got it, but I haven't done that yet and they are covering him...

How long have you been married? At my place of employment you can only put someone on the health insurance for 1 month after a qualifying event. I didn't realize that until I went to add James and luckily it was within 1 month of our marriage...
