That's quite a judgment.

What about people with mental problems who don't have someone to look after them, who end up on the streets?

Nature has a way of running its course. There's always someone there to help and people out there looking for others to help.

The problem always comes when others are forced to help other people.

If no one is there to help, then perhaps one was not meant to be help. It's the way of life. It's a circle that isn't always "right" in everyone's eyes, but it is what it is.

I am really glad I don't just depend on emotionless nature to run it's course.

who said about it being emotionless?

Nature is quite emotional. That doesn't mean that every Tom, #######, Peter, and Mary have to always be there to help everyone out who's not within their inner-circle.

I am not sure what you mean by nature in this instance then. People are nature?

But going back to your other point, I don't think you should judge every person on the street as capable but unwilling. Some are very incapable. I am talking outside of the government issue right now, about personal decisions to help others.

They should be in a mental institution, not on the streets.

So what if they have no one to help them get into one? Things seem easy when we are not the ones in the situation.

I wasn't really talking about government either.

My only point was, is that there's not always going to be someone around to help. That is nature and that's part of the circle of life. Doesn't mean people are emotionless, nor does it mean that people don't want to help. It just simply means that not every can or always will be helped for one reason or another.

As I said, Tom, #######, Peter, and Mary do well enough to take care of themselves during hard times. Taking someone else under their wing may not be an option when they're scraping by as well. They may want to help, but cannot.

Sure, people get "put out on the street" for reasons beyond their control all the time. But the decision to stay there long after UI benefits have run out - can that really be attributed entirely to bad luck?

"Run out of luck" is just an expression. It's not a literal indication of why they are in need of charity.

there's no such thing to be quite honest.

When there's a will, there's always a way.

You look for certainty when you'll find none. You cannot possibly know the situations or circumstances that might lead to your brother, sister, or neighbor in dire need of help. If they come asking you for that help, I suppose you could spend the time making sure they aren't conning you, or you could treat them with dignity by offering to help them in any way you could.

Brother, Sister & Neighbor (with whom you have a friendship) are all different from a stranger begging money at the local target entrance.

As someone who has given the shirt off his back in the past I can tell you that it won't happen again.

* There were situations where the person I helped just seemed to always fall on bad times again so my efforts were wasted.

* There was the sibling who asked to borrow money to get through rough patches and only repaid it once out of 4 times. Now they no longer speak to me.

* There was the brother-in-law who asked me to loan him money to recover his repossessed car because he still owed his Mom & Aunt money so he couldn't ask them. At the time he was aware that myself and one of my brothers shouldered the expenses around my mother's recent (2 weeks prior) death. I had no contact with him or my sister (his wife) for years before the funeral.

* There was my aforementioned Mom whom I took into my house not once but twice and in the end all she did was endanger my children and betray me. She spent the last decade of her life homeless living on the fringes of society leaching off the social programs with no plans to do anything else.

I've been there, done that and don't care to experience it again. Am I open to helping others, sure but I'm picky about who and how.

Yes those kinds of things can happen. I can understand your view. I don't go around handing out all my money to people, but sometimes you can tell that you just really need to give to someone.

As for who is a neighbor, for me personally I follow the view presented by Jesus in the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25-37. He showed that everyone is your neighbor, in that a Samaritan(Samaritans at odds with the Jews Jesus was speaking to) was the one to help a man who was robbed and beaten. In the parable, a Jewish priest and Levite pass by the man without helping while a Samaritan stops to help.

Jesus then says:

36"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"

37The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him."

Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

"Portraying a Samaritan in positive light would have come as a shock to Jesus' audience.[1] It is typical of his provocative speech in which conventional expectations are turned upside down.[1]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_Good_Samaritan - kind of like cliff notes about the parable
