This guy goes to prison for 10 years for < 1 gram of weed....Let's look at some other recent Maldivian court rulings:

1) Non-Muslims can NEVER become a citizen of Maldives!! That's right, only Muslims can become citizens under the new and improved constitution: http://themdp.wordpr...w-constitution/

2) Turkish national Serkan Akar, found guilty of assaulting children, sentenced to pay $14: http://minivannews.c...-children-10177

A resident of The Maldives who was convicted of possessing 1 gram of cannabis for his own use, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Well known Maldivian reggae artist Haisham Mohamed Rasheed has been sentenced to ten years for use and possession of less than one gram of cannabis.

Famous Maldivian reggae artist Haisham Mohamed Rasheed has been sentenced to ten years for use and possession of less than one gram of cannabis.

Haisham, of Maafannu Loha, was arrested with a bag containing the illegal narcotics while in a resort to perform a live music show.

The Criminal Court convicted Haisham under Article 4 [a][1] of the Drug Act after he tested positive for cannabis, an illegal substance under the Act. Haisham received five years for using the drug and five years for possession.

The judge ruled that according to witness statements, evidence, and Haisham's own confession, he owned the bag containing illegal narcotics with which he was found.

Haisham was the lead artist of the band 'Palm Fever'. He also produced his own music and had acquired a popular following during a career which he started as a child performer at the Inter-school singing competition.

Haisham respectfully requests anyone who likes to smoke a joint and is perhaps considering a holiday to his beloved home 'The Maldives' to please boycott the islands until his government see sense and release him.

1. the entire country is muslim, and they want to keep it that way.

2. obviously you haven't been paying attention to the USA... people get all up in arms about "other countries" when here in the US women and children are treated as less than second class citizens in MANY areas and considerd worthless. maybe that is soemthing you have been blessed not to have witnessed or experienced.

3. (though wasnt labeled as "3") illegal is illegal. they dont give a smack on the hand and let him progress to higher level criminal behaviour just because joker only 'broke the law a little'.

if you gave your info (receipt #s, full name, etc) to anyone on VJ under the guise that they would "help" you through the immigration journey with his inside contacts (like his sister at USCIS) ... please contact OLUInquiries@dhs.gov, and go to http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact to report anything suspicious. Contact your congressman and senator's offices as well.

They will get theirs. I understand that if there is global warming, man made or otherwise, the Maldives will be one of the first places to disappear. Kind of like the canary in the coal mine, if you know what I mean. If you ask me, the whole island ought to live like they were dying.

So I am clear. Ten years for 1 gram of pot is ok? $14 fine for child molestation is also reasonable?

LOL those are YOUR words: "ok" and "reasonable"

i believe the one word which would apply here a little more closely would be 'hypocritical'

I think it had more to do with religion. The Turkish guy was most likely Sunni Muslim. All people in Maldives are Sunni Muslims...

Maldives atheist who felt persecuted 'hangs himself'

15 July 2010 Last updated at 05:13 ET

A man in the Indian Ocean island state of the Maldives has died, apparently by suicide, after complaining of being victimised for not being a Muslim.

Ismail Mohamed Didi, 25, had admitted being an atheist and had sought political asylum abroad.

He was found on Tuesday hanging at his workplace - the air traffic control tower at the international airport in the capital, Male.

It is compulsory for citizens of the Maldives to be Sunni Muslims.

{snipped copy/paste from internet re: turkey being sunni muslim country and article about an atheist who hanged himself. leaving the only 3 original sentences}

you quoted me when you posted this... maybe i'm having a blonde moment but i didnt see the relevance.

 what is your purpose with this thread? rather than just posting articles, why not say what's on your mind?

in OP you posted "that non-muslims cannot become citizens", obviously that has something 'to do with religion' :P

 but what does religion have to do with the turkish guy? one of the 4 punishments there for the crime he committed is fine of 200Rf (or $14US), which is 'punishment' he was given. not all rulings feel correct, but this is not limited to other countries.

i find it hugely hypocritical when people finger point at other countries when we have same problems (or worse) here in USA. using your example of assault, many here are never even given a smack on the hand...

the guy doing "10yrs for <1 gram pot" = he broke their law. dont do the crime if you cant do the time.

he was given 5yrs for each charge and would most likely serve them concurrently. but of course we wouldnt expect them to be open about the factoid that he is looking at 5yrs, now would we? i.e. he is trying to garner sympathy for his punishment = 10yrs sounds so much more 'over the top' for him breaking the law 'only a little'.

so you are clear  it was "assault", not "molestation".

tell us how much the fine is here in US for allegedly choking a child or whipping them with a belt.

(BTW, the man denied charges)

Child abuse carries much more than a fine here. Depending on severity it can mean substantial fines, jail time, loss of child custody.

Laws do indeed differ among nations but if you fail to see where 5 to 10 years for a gram of pot vs $14 fine for choking and whipping a child show a pretty wacked set of priorities I don't know what to tell you.

what is Rf200 the equivalent to in their economy versus ours? we all know what $5US can buy in some countries :o, so it's not exactly correct to say they only fined him "$14" like we're talking about the value of $14US in L.A., California. they fined him WHAT THE LAW REQUIRED; you would know that if you actually read the article.

my point was "wake up and look around", it's hypocritical to point to other countries and say "oh how bad these people are" when right here in our own country children are abused every day and nothing happens to the abuser. not corporal punishment but are beaten, burned, starved, killed.... and worse. yes, sometimes being alive is worse than death for some children. the abuse some do to children is horrific, but some reason people think children are "resilient"... and our judicial system doesnt hold women and child as valuable so abusers soemtimes get little or no punishment.

some in other countries look at america and point at us, with good reason. who are we to tell them how to run their countries when we have such a messed up system here... and i agree. get your own house in order (america) before you go around telling other countries how they're doing it wrong.

ready4ONE, you may want to enlighten yourself on actual laws around the USA (not just what is morally right/wrong)... call your local CPS and ask them if you "whip your child" (not "beat" but "whip"), even every day, if you would lose custody. you might be surprised by the answer. ask about using a belt when whipping, or some other item that is 'the norm' in corporal punishment. again, you might be surprised. in some areas, a closed fist to the face is only thing off limits as far as hitting a child :(

if that makes you sick, good, DO soemthing about it...

another thing conveniently left out of the dope smoker article: how many times has this joker been arrested for drug possession and drug usage... how much time has he spent in jail/prison prior to this. this is why i dont believe every little thing i see on tv, in the news, and online... dig a little more and ask questions.

 he's inviting people to come smoke with him at his home... guess he's not too concerned about the 5yrs/5yrs.

"In Miami and the State of Florida, mere possession of an illegal or controlled substance in most circumstances is a felony, both in state and federal court. An exception to this rule is possession of a minimal amount of cannabis (marijuana), which is currently a misdemeanor.

A misdemeanor in the first degree carries a maximum punishment of 364 days in the county jail, while a felony in the third degree carries a maximum punishment of 5 years in state prison.

Marijuana Possession < 20 grams 1st degree misdemeanor"

and in Florida they arent drug friendly... tourism and prisons are their bread and butter. you WILL do max time and good time will only knock off 15% because they have mandatory 85% time.
