IRS tax transcript is something you get from the IRS, mailed or faxed to you. It lists everything from your tax return - is an IRS verification of your taxes you filed.

Tax Return is something you file every year. Either online, by paper or through a company like H&R Block. Copy of a tax return would be a copy of every page of your tax return that you filed.

IRS tax transcripts are usually 1-2 pages while the tax returns are many many pages.

We didn't bother with transcripts, just had identical copies as submitted to the IRS, signed with all 1099's and W-2s attached. But my wife's IO insisted on keeping those, that upset me as that was our copy. But what the heck, have all the data here to make our copies, just haven't done it yet, matter of fact, just took out our bank statements, brief case is still full of the rest of the stuff, haven't sorted that out yet, but only been two years now.

Least my wife said NO to her IO wanting to keep our original divorce papers, would have cost a fortune to have those replaced. And we still needed those for other reasons, we would like to forget that stage of our lives, but they won't let us.

You should leave with all of your original documentation that you went into. Was steaming when I went through our evidence in the car, wanted to go back in and get it, but said the heck with it. Definitely don't leave your check books.
