Since I was unemployed last year, I thought I didn't need to file taxes for 2009...in pulling together the info showing that I didn't need to file, it appears that I actually do - retirement/etc funds earning were high enough I think.

What's the fastest way for me to file and get a return back in time for our interview Nov 2nd??? I've never filed online before, I always go through a tax preparation service but time is an issue now.

And what exactly do I need to take with me to the interview? If I do the FreeFile online, can I just print out what comes up at the end, is that sufficient to show I did file for 09??

Thanks!

You will need a copy of your tax return along with all the supporting documents (1099's, schedules, etc.) for the I-864. If you are comfortable doing it yourself online, go ahead. If you prefer to have a prep service do it, they will likely file online as well. Either way you will have the physical return to copy and present.

Worst case scenario is you get asked for an IRS transcript (for proof of filing) and hopefully it is available.

Biggest thing is get it filed as soon as possible to give yourself the best chance to have a transcript available if needed.
