...specifically at the airport? I've done quite a bit of investigation, and it seems like GSM 1800 coverage is equal to or greater than GSM 900 coverage in Europe, so it seems like this will work, but I'd like someone, with specific knowledge, to confirm. Thanks.

Yes, it will -- provided your US carrier has a roaming partner in Germany or you have a SIM card for a German carrier in the 1800 band. I know this from my own experience. Beware that roaming charges from Europe are huge -- something like $2/min. If you intend to use your phone frequently, it's much better to get a German SIM card.

I just used an "unlocked" quad band phone there. Bought a T-mobile sim card at a gas station, although you could probably pick up one in the airport. Would not recommend T-mobile if you can avoid it get another carrier, they stink on activation, their website was down several days and you cannot activate from the sim card you are trying to activate on unless you buy it at a phone store and someone can do it for you. it also takes them a couple hours to get it going after you call customer service from another phone or activate it on the web
