On a positive note, I think this has finally awoken everyone's need to find alternative rare earth metals. Now other governments will likely subsidize their mining. I think we all knew China would use the metals as a political card, we just needed to have them actually do it to spur change.

As long as Australia doesn't become powerful enough to challenge the supremacy of the Chinese, I doubt China will care. They are busy with their immediate neighborhood for now and are busy taking down the true powers of the region - countries like Japan. Australia doesn't even rate.

The true power in the region is still the U.S.

If China ever decides to "come over" it won't be a Soviet-style Red Dawn attack, it'll be a nice big ol' EMP followed by massive amounts of bio/chem weapons released into the jet stream from freighters parked 1,000 miles off the coast. In truth, all they'd really have to do is cut us off economically. We'd crumble in a few weeks.
