We're expecting our immigrant visa soon. In light of this, my husband is getting rid of most of his belongings. However, there are a lot of personal things of monetary or sentimental value that he doesn't want to just give up. With the immigrant visa in hand, and no security issues, will we be able to bring some of his personal belongings into the US from Canada? Or will the border patrol officers/agents go crazy if we have "stuff" with us?

How often does someone get the visa after this long stressful process and then get turned away at the border anyway?

I've been told that you need to fill out a 3299 form for any possessions you are bringing into the US. Otherwise you may have to pay duty on it.

Check at the US Customs web site. It's bound to have the information you are looking for. We just moved our household over via container, but I let spouse handle it all. To be duty free it had to have been purchased and used in our household or something like that, so he is probably fine. But US Customs will have your answer.
