Although I've told my fiancé that we can do the entire process by ourselves, he wants to hire an immigration lawyer to help him with the petition, but I have my doubts about it after all the stories I've read here!...

I want to know if someone here in VJ has hired this immigration lawyer in the past : his name is David Gonzalez and his office is located in CA.

Thanks in advance!

I consulted with a lawyer since I was thinking about getting one. It cost us $300 just to speak to her, she gave us some good pointers, and she gave us a checklist of what we needed to gather. It was pointless for us, all the information is on this site.

Trust in this site, no one will steer you wrong, as we are all here to help each other.

First of all, thanks everyone for your opinions, advices and words of support! I appreciate all of them

In fact, I could fill out both I-129 and my biographic form with no issues by following the examples and asking a couple of questions here. I prepared a packet and sent it to him so he must only add what's missing. I told him that when he was prepared, I could give him a hand to fill out his G-325 A, print out letters of intent, cover letter, etc. due to my fiancé is not very skillful at computers.

However, he insists on that point.

I also think that hiring a lawyer would be a waste of money that he could save for another important things. I don't know how to convince my fiancé! I haven't had any problem such as criminal record, attempting enter illegaly ,etc.

You know, if anything you should be totally flattered. He loves you SO much that no amount of "wasted" money is actually wasted to him. He wants to be 100% sure that everything is being done right so he can get you here fast,... it's pretty sweet really :)

I understand where he's coming from in regards to feeling daunted by the paperwork. Perhaps it would be beneficial for him to hop on VJ and have a look around. Tell him that while you appreciate he wants a lawyer, the risks of the lawyer stuffing up (typos are VERY common and a pain sometimes to fix) outweigh the stress of completing the forms. Offer to complete his forms for him and mail them to him to simply sign and send off... I did the entire process myself (my husband, then fiance, helped of course, but he was overwhelmed like your fiance) and I'm okay with having done it... I'm a little bit ####### about paperwork actually so worked out best for us.

I think he feels overwhelmed, as you said earlier. When I prepared the packet, I included tagged subject dividers to make things easier for him when he put all the photocopies of documents that are missing ...he appreciated the job. His concerns are about the forms, I showed him the comments that posters sent so I hope he think it over.

It's not a problem for me giving him a hand with this . I'm used to deal with paperwork due to my job, so I'm like you, prefer checking each detail.

Since you don't have complications in your case anywhere, I don't think he needs a lawyer. Like you said, you could fill out everything, put the whole packet together and let him just sign where he needs to sign, add in anything he needs to (you can tell him what needs to be added), and then he can mail it off. I do not know how to convince him that you have researched this a lot, and don't feel a lawyer needs to be brought in, but maybe you can just tell him with a lawyer you still need to gather everything and all they do is fill out the papers for you. Who better than you to gather up everything you need and to fill the forms out and make sure everything is correct, all the t's crossed and i's dotted? You have emotions invested in this, and a lawyer does not.

If you have any questions about the forms, and stuff about going to Juarez later down the line, feel free to ask me. Good luck! :)
