I take issue with any study about stuff like this as it's something that carries a stigma. I can guarantee you that more than 1.5% of the UK is gay, otherwise I've met most of them just in the South West.

Ireland is notoriously religious, so I'm not surprised that it has a low figure.

From my experience, these type surveys are confidential. Are you suggesting that in the UK, people are so afraid of being "outed" that they won't even answer a survey truthfully?

Not exactly. I just think when something carries a stigma (such as being gay), it's harder for people to admit to themselves that they are gay or bisexual. I'm sure everyone has had one of those friends that you believe is gay, but they're adamant that they're not, as if it's an insult. I know of four people that later realised that they were gay and came out.
