No pretty much everyone speaks english.

There arent really any cheap hotels near the embassy because its in a higher end area. Downtown is really saught after for hotels and many of them are quite pricy. They also fill up pretty quickly.

Across the street from the consulate is a hotel called Tour de Centreville. Inexpensive (100 a night) for the area but i didnt like the hotel nor did i feel very safe. Location cant be beat tho. There is a bus that runs from the airport (747) that goes past the hotel and costs only $7.00. Good luck!

Book on hotwire or priceline, we got our hotel at the Delta Montral, walking distance to the consulate, for $55 a night

Good luck

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

cheapest way from airport to downtown mtl is the city bus!! http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090926181440AAptcMF But I believe you have to do some transfers!!!

Next best option is L'eurobus. If u buy ur return ticket at same time it is $26 ttl@@ Big bus picks u up at airport, just outside arrivals and takes you downtown to the train station! You get off there and get into a smaller shuttle bus that for free (driver takes tips) takes you to ur hotel For the return its exactly the opposite. small shuttle to train stn, then on to big bus to airport!! I had my hotel call and reserve the small shuttle to pick me up! Worked rather well! I think a cab ride is probably in the $30+ range EACH way! http://www.autobus.qc.ca/anglais/pops-up_an/mtl_dorval_an.html

I stayed at the tour le centrivelle back in 2004 and it was DATED!!! I was there by myself, so I was ok with it. It had a fridge to keep my beer cold so i was happy! would i stay there again?? no!! It was very dated, lol Staff were friendly though. I usually like to stay at nicer hotels as they usually have nicer beds! As I recall the bed there sucked!! Many have said the Delta was nice.

I didnt think the area around the consulate was all that bad! I did a lot of walking around, and felt safe! If ya want to feel uncomfortable, come walk around some of the DC areas, lol A fair # of hotels within a 15-20 min walk from the consulate.

I do not know any french--and did fine. of course i never really talked with anyone, lol I ate out a few times and survived! Best of luck

I did the same thing and stayed in the same hotel. It was a very nice hotel, and only about a 5 min walk to the consualte from there. I can't comment on transport from the airport to the hotel as I drove, but generally there are shuttle services that go from airports to the downtown hotels for a fairly reasonable price.
