Hi Everyone! Just wanted some advice on decent pubs here in Montgomery, AL. My husband is from the UK and misses nights out on the beer with his mates and having a pint at a decent pub. Does anyone know of any around Montgomery, AL? He gets homesick and I am hoping a pint at a pub will help. We have found lots of his favourite foods at Publix. They have a section for English foods...thank goodness. Also any suggestions on how to help with the homesickness? Thanks a bunch!

Hun, we live in the South, WE have BARS, not pubs ;)

In all seriousness though have you tried a phone book? It might be listed as an Irish pub, but there has to be something...I would hope!

For helping with the homesickness, I am going to try and take Rob to do something in Arkansas every weekend. Hopefully, getting to see the state will make this feel more like home. I found a website for Arkansas that has 100 Free things to do...you might see if AL has something like that. Oh and....

GO HOGS!!!! ;)

I was able to find some pubs when I first moved to FL (I'm now in the metropolitan DC area) by using this link:

http://www.britsinthestates.com/

It used to be a part of this link (http://www.ujnews.com/) but it appears they have gone their separate ways.

What my husband did to help with the homesickness was to research anything British in the area and then take me for a drive to see if they were any good. He did this with ethnic grocery stores too. I love to cook, and the availability of the ingredients I was used to seeing in Canada or the UK was dismal, to say the least. You will find a larger choice of items at the World Market. (Don't go by their website.... they have a great selection in the store.) There is one in Montgomery County, too!....

Honestly, the homesickness was very delibitating. :( Your best defense is a lot of patience and understanding. If he gets mad or upset at seemingly minor things, don't take it personally. The best thing my husband could do was hold me and let me know he cared and understood. That goes miles to calming down a situation. Once your husband starts familiarizing himself with the area and knows where to go to pick up a little bit of home, he'll start settling. It's a scary situation to live in a country where you speak the same language but no one understands you. LOL. I found the first year the hardest. By the second year, I started settling in. When I hit Year 3 it was a breeze. :)
