Well sorry to hear the male national pastime in Ukraine seems to be wife beating.

Guess I didn't notice the bus thing while I was visiting Belarus, probably because my frugal husband thought it was more practical to walk :) I know every time we meet overseas he goes out of his way to buy presents for everyone in his family along with his mom, but they are always infinitely practical.

The upside of the "food thing" is I never had to clean the frig.

Nah...the national past time seems to be drinking vodka and going to futbol games. Beating wives is what they do when they run out of money for futbol and vodka. While I am sorry for the women in Ukraine, what the heck...I got Alla in the deal. Who's complaining?

tsk, tsk, tsk.......Gary was talking about Total Overall Kills.....not Kills made with a Rifle !!!!! :star:

Well, whether you talk about individual weapons or total Overall Kills, I believe Sidorenko is the top Soviet Sniper. I'm not trying to discredit the achievements of female soviet snipers which were considerable, to say the least, so much as simply fact-check Gary's claim.

It's somewhat ironic that although Russia has many chauvinist tendencies, a type of feminism also saw considerable support. Pavlichenko and Lubkovskaya probably get and got the most publicity even though they weren't the best, a sort of affirmative action along the lines of "famous women scientists" etc. Of course, they were definitely top 5, so it's not really fair to discredit them either.

OK, OK. But still, women in the FSU were always very participative, so to speak. And no one argues that it was women that rebuilt the USSR (such that it was...ok) after the war due to a distinct lack of men. I guess my point is that a woman in the FSU would do whatever she HAD to do but did not necessarily want to.

You touch on what I believe is the heart of the problem. Societies with a significant shortage of men and fathers (as was the case in the USSR immediately post WWII) have a difficulty turning boys into men. The current societal problems in the FSU can be traced back to the fatherlessness of the post-war period.

Thanks for the fact check. Your conclusions about Boys 2 Men (oh, never mind) ignores the fact that contemporary Russian writing from long before the 2nd war reveals a pervasive culture of abuse of women. Not saying you are wrong in every case, just that it may not be the only reason in this case

Now I can see why the ladies make women's day is such a big deal over there. Instead of a backhand, they're given flowers and gifts

They do not lose the holiday when they move here. I hope you are not under the impression that they give up holidays. Or presents.

Had Pavlichenko stayed on the front and not been paraded around on the world tour, she probably would've surpassed just about everyone. Remember, almost all her kills were done in about a three month time frame.

Maybe not in Vermont. But here in Cincinnati.... it's just like any other March 8th.

Hey, don't feel bad. I still have the CD somewhere. Probably right next to my Snow, MC Hammer and Bobby Brown discs.

I lickee boom boom down....

Before I was known as Slim, I was known as Informer. I used to kick it with a group of guys that was "hanging out with" this group of Filipina girls and we'd always jam to some hip hop (and Canadian reggae!) at the club. On occasion, I would rock the mic and for some reason, Informer would always come on when it was my turn. To this day, I can still hit the lyrics for the whole track.

Shortly thereafter we flipped from lumpias to pilmeni and I was dubbed Slimski. I aint ever looked back.
