Hi

Having just got my simmie over here on a k1 visa we want to plan our honeymoon. Is it correct that we can't leave the US? Does Hawaii count?

Many thanks

No, Hawaii is considered apart of the usa... A territory a is the virgin islands (us), puerto rico and guam.

Feel free to travel to any of those places. A valid id would be required. incase anything should arise- feel free to take any of the aos documents to support your "status."

Happy Travel!

It is true that after you enter the US and get married, you cannot leave US until you have either of the AP document or conditional GC (whichsoever comes earlier will work--the conditional GC trumps the AP). Hawaii is a US state, as is Alaska--so you CAN go to these, but need to ensure that no other country is hit (even for refuel) enroute--an easy way to do that is to use a US-based airline.

Hawaii is a state (the 50th to be exact). You can go there.

I would use this as a general rule of thumb, don't go to places where you will be required to show a passport or other type of official document until you have the AP document or the GC.

Enjoy the honeymoon!

Avoid US territories, like Virgin Islands and PR.

This is bad advice. There is nothing wrong with travelling to U.S. territories.

K1: 01/15/2009 (mailed I-129F) - 06/23/2009 (visa received)

AOS: 08/08/2009 (mailed I-485, I-765, & I-131) - 10/29/2009 (received GC)

Please read the FAQs before giving advice, don't mislead someone.

5.12)...Is it okay for us to go to the US Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico on our honeymoon without Advance Parole?

A...Maybe not a wise thing to do. Even though these islands are US territories or possessions, you may have to deal with Immigration and Customs to get back to the United States. You might have trouble getting back home if you encounter an insane USCIS (INS) inspector, plus, there are too many opportunities to "technically" leave US jurisdiction (by visiting the adjacent islands, for example). Best to take the honeymoon somewhere in the 50 States, where there is plenty to see and do.

It's not illegal per se, but why risk it??
