Aug. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Two suitcases containing bottles of gasoline, propane gas and a detonating device that were found abandoned in German regional trains last month were bombs primed to go off and kill a "high number'' of people, police said.

"We're accusing as yet unknown suspects of having tried to ignite unconventional flammable and explosive devices on July 31, 2006, in the cities of Dortmund and Koblenz with the aim of killing a high number of people,'' Federal Prosecutor Rainer Griesbaum said at a press conference in Wiesbaden, Germany, today. The perpetrators are suspected of being members of a "domestic terrorist organization,'' Griesbaum said.

[...]

... no one has claimed responsibility for the planned attacks, he said.

[...]

The July 31 attempt "is likely to have a terrorist background,'' Zierke said. Investigators found pieces of paper with Arabic letters and telephone numbers from Lebanon in clothes which were in the suitcases to pad the gas bottles, he said.

[...]

Police are looking for two males, who transported the two suitcases at Cologne train station. Video material of them was shown at the press conference today.

OK. So America is the land of immigrants, but why did European countries, traditionally

unfriendly to immigrants, let a fifth column infiltrate their societies?

They felt guilty killing 6 million Jews.

#######. European countries, contrary to what Americans might think, have always had a significant influx of immigrants, only they didn't call them that but migrant workers or political/religious refugees.

To claim that Europe has been infliltrated by some "fifth column" which I assume refers to people from Muslim societies is not only wrong but misses the point. In several European countries, Muslims make up about ten percent of the population, and guess what? Most of them are neither violent nor inclined to support violence against their countries of residence. Yet, because the debate on terrorism is raging in Europe with similarly indiscriminate language, namely blaming Muslims for being backwards, hostile, etc, of course Muslim immigrants feel alienated. I saw an interview with a Turkish-German woman see other day, and she said that she felt German until about 3-4 years ago, when the "war on terrorism"-language of polarization started to infiltrate society. Now, she feels that she is being judged by the religion of her parents and their ethnic background because people keep reminding her of the fact that she's different.

BERLIN - The second main suspect in a failed plot to bomb two German trains turned himself in to authorities in his native Lebanon on Thursday, German federal prosecutors said.

Jihad Hamad, 20, was arrested after turning himself in to police in Tripoli, prosecutors said in a statement. The other main suspect, a 21-year-old Lebanese student identified as Youssef Mohamad el Hajdib, was arrested in Germany on Saturday.

The men are suspected of planting crude bombs July 31 on two trains at Cologne station, where they were seen in grainy surveillance camera footage pulling wheeled suitcases.

The detonators on the bombs went off, but failed to ignite the devices, authorities have said. The bombs were found later in the day on regional trains in Koblenz and Dortmund.

El Hajdib's arrest came after a tip-off from Lebanese intelligence, according to German authorities. It was not immediately clear whether they were also involved in Hamad's decision to turn himself in.

Hamad's arrest comes a day after Germany issued an international arrest warrant for him on suspicion of membership in a terrorist organization, attempting to set off an explosion and multiple counts of attempted murder.

Investigators were able to determine his identity through the video surveillance footage, prosecutors said. Authorities are now seeking his extradition, prosecutors said.

German investigators had offered a reward of up to a $65,000 for information leading to Hamad's arrest. A wanted poster showed both a blurry picture of the suspect taken from the surveillance footage and a clear head shot of Hamad, clean shaven with short hair.

Authorities have said others possibly were involved in the plot. They said Wednesday they were trying to determine if there were any links to known terrorist organizations.

Because of the rudimentary nature of the bomb construction — barbecue gas canisters with trigger mechanisms using alarm clocks — and the fact that they failed to go off, experts have speculated that the suspects did not have serious terrorist training.

Still, the case has caused widespread public concern that Germany is now also a target for terrorism. It has prompted calls for tougher security measures, including more video surveillance and a database of potential terrorists.

Police searched Hamad's Cologne apartment Wednesday after determining he was the second bombing suspect.

The daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung, citing unnamed police sources, reported Thursday that unused detonators and accelerants were found during the search and that authorities believed both of the bombs were made in the apartment.

Federal police spokesman Dietmar Mueller said he could neither confirm nor deny the report because the investigation was ongoing.

So, I'll ask again: What's up with a mother (or father) naming their kid Jihad? I mean, #######?

Hey, what's your name? I'm Holy War Miller. Oh, nice to meet you Holy War.

Doesn't that just sound wrong? I can't imagine that sounding right in any language...

Huh? Schwarzenegger, whatever it might look like, means the black harrower, the black referring either to the color of the hair or indicating that the habitation of the person given that name was in the shade.

Yep, it does sound wrong, but then most countries don't have the any naming conventions for children, leading to weird names. But Jihad probably tops them all...
